Republicans 2016: A Contracting List of True Contenders
Larry J Sabato's Crystal Ball ^ | 11-19-2015 | Kyle Kondik

The atrocities in Paris over the weekend show that events can and will inject new issues into the presidential contest or intensify ones that already exist. But it’s important to remember that what dominates news today might not be what dominates it a month from now, and we still have two and a half months until the primary season begins and nearly a year before the general election.

The most interesting paragraph from the article:

"Many have suggested Trump is blocking Cruz from increasing his support, but it might be more that Carson is. Trump’s supporters are LESS evangelical and CONSERVATIVE, and thus are probably less likely to flock to Cruz than Carson’s more evangelical backers.

T1umo supporters tend more liberal and moderate. Evangelicals and conservatives have nothing in common with Trump.

I tend to tilt at windmills. As an ardent social conservative, I still cling to Rick Santorum as my first choice. However, Cruz is my second choice, and I like to seem him rising in the polls. I’ve enjoyed watching the heartache that Trump has been giving the GOPe, but I’m still not comfortable with him. Social conservatives have been given a back seat too many times. The McCain, Romney pattern still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I try to be optimistic about how Trump might govern, but I still would definitely prefer Cruz over Trump (if I can’t have Santorum).

There is a thought that fiscal conservatism will lead to social conservatism. Once you cut off the money for the liberal positions they go away, or at least slow down.

I was in the Santorum camp last time as my train of candidates were picked off one by one: Bachmann, Cain, and eventually Santorum.

He’s ok on social issues, but on the economic ones, he leaves a lot to be desired. His stance on the minimum wage is the same to Huckabee and is just wrong. Increasing the MW doesn’t increase one’s standard of living automatically.

But what really killed Rick was the Feb 28 debate right before the Arizona/Michigan primaries. Up to that contest he had a legitimate shot to win much bigger headed into Super Tuesday. But his “play ball” answer to Romney’s attack on his Senate voting record killed him. Rick could have turned that around on Romney, but that answer was so poor, the contest was effectively over. Yes, he won states after that but not in the numbers he needed to stay in the race past April.

With Ted Cruz, you’ll never have to worry about him having a cringe-worthy debate moment.

Any decent social conservative should ally with the plans of fiscal conservatives.

If someone is conservative in one area but not the other, then they do not understand how these things work.

So tell me what conservatism is. I have had many discussion here on FR where government is the solution to every problem. I have been told “our laws are better.” yet, limited government should be a tenant of conservatism.

I don’t live in a perfect world. If I can get fiscal conservatism, I will take it...................

If you go back to the 18th century, Conservatives like Edmund Burke pushed for limited government involvement in the lives of citizens and also pushed for family values as the foundation of society.

Many people today (Libertarians) think that the Individual is the thing upon which society is built. Conservatives would say “No”. It is the family that underpins all decent social structures. Families carry on old traditions, and they try to build better futures also. Individuals do not always care about either the past or the future.

Also, some of the original Conservatives were actually atheists — yet they still pushed Christian morality as a crucial tool for the workings of a well-ordered society. They understood human nature and they understood the importance of morality. They may not have cared about Jesus and they may not have believed in Heaven, but they still supported Christian morality. Because it made sense.

Men marrying women and raising children. Christian morality. And limited government as a means for common defense and the protection of inalienable rights. That’s what Conservatism is.
