Nice link. Thanks. (I’m a Yank in Ontario so the Canuck connection was appreciated as well).

Cavalry Troop Photo from 1880s

Fellow Troopers,

The 3rd Squadron 4th Cavalry traces its direct lineage to C Troop 4th Cavalry which was constituted 3 March 1855 in the Regular Army as Company C, 1st Cavalry organized 17 June 1855 at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri.  The troop was redesignated 3 August 1861 as Company C, 4th Cavalry.  C Troop was reorganized and re-designated 29 July 1963 as the 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry.

Bingo Bingham recently received a photograph of C Troop, our squadron's ancestor organization, taken in the 1880s at Ft. Huachuca, AZ.  The photograph is from the J.H. Dorst papers in the library of the USMA.  J.H. Dorst served in the 4th Cavalry and is in front of C Troop in this photo.

The photo was taken by C.S. Fly. See the back of the photo below.

C.S. Fly ran a lodging house and photo studio in the mining town of Tombstone, Arizona in the 1880's. Doc Holliday lodged in C.S. Fly's lodging house. C.S Fly's studio was located next to the OK Corral.  Billy Clanton was shot in the alley next to Fly's Lodging House, where the Clanton's had gathered. Billy was relieved of his pistol by C. S. Fly after the gun fight.  In 1886, Fly accompanied General Crook to Canyon de Los Embudos for the negotiations with Geronimo.  His most famous photographs are of Geronimo, the negotiations, and the Apaches.

I recall in about late April, possibly early May of 1975, the 3rd Squadron and equipment was loaded on C141’s at Hickam AFB waiting Prez Ford’s orders to go retake Ton Son Nhut. I believe they were to be the leading element of the 25th ID.

Needless to say, the orders never came and the troops went back to the barracks demoralized, only to watch on TV people climbing on to helicopters at the embassy to escape.

Selected 3/4 Cav aviation members were sent to Navy aircraft carriers to aid in retrieving ARVN helicopters fleeing Vietnam. Numerous UH’1’s were just shoved overboard.

With a victory under their belts, the American left has been on the roll ever since.

One very best cavalry is Harold Sinclair’s 1956 novel Horse Soldiers. It is based on the historic 17-day Grierson’s Raid and the basis of the John Wayne Movie of the same name.

Another good book if you can find it is Reveille by James Warner Bella. It is a series of short stories written Bellah on which Ford/Wayne cavalry trilogy was based. Almost IMPOSSIBLE to find though.

Had a GGGuncle who joined the 4th Cav in 1856 right off the boat from Ireland. His Company was attached to the Army of the Cumberland and was at Chickamunga, SP.

The horses were tired of swimming. Things have gotten a bit wonky under the present CIC.

This particular troop of cavalry is a group of reenactors. They are a club. Fort Leavenworth, Fort Osage, Westport, and other venues host such groups that represent historical periods around these parts. Sounds like their commander will at least look the part. Many of these other groups have some old overweight gezzers who can only portray General Winfield Scott.
