Like almost all established political prognosticators, Larry Sabato is befuddled by the meteoric rise of Donald Trump to the top of the Republican Party’s presidential primary field. That Trump, who is not a politician, can merely get into the arena, do a few deep knee bends and pummel one professional politician after another seems to have him stupefied.
Although he has not commented on the victory of Matt Bevin in Kentucky yet, that race has to have had him tied in knots as well. Sabato called Bevin, who won with 14 points more than the polls Sabato relies on, a “weak candidate.†He probably thought he was being kind by setting the race in Kentucky as “leans Democrat.†He actually said, “Whatever the results, the GOP better hope that these races are not harbingers for 2016. Because while deep-red Kentucky and Louisiana still might ultimately vote for flawed Republican candidates this year, the country probably will not do the same next year.â€
Sabato’s response to a Democrat’s sigh that they lost Kentucky because of “Trump-mania†is as yet unknown. Nevertheless, his inability to independently correlate Trump and the surge that brought a man who can rightfully be seen as Trump’s stalking horse to a smashing victory, sums up Sabato’s problem.
This confusion is emblematic of the sharp differences between the “Old Politics†Sabato understands and clings to and how thoroughly Trump has changed the rules of the game.
Sabato’s placement of Trump at the top of the top tier in the Republican field shows that at least he is not being fooled by the “national†polls of a few hundred people with over 4 point margins of error.

The more they hate on Trump, the better people like him. The DC Machine does not get it, average voters now recognize THEY are the enemy.
Larry Sabato is a mediocre academician and sub par left wing political hack. It doesn’t take much to befuddle him.
They’re are many like him here in Charlottesville! A lot of them stand on medians at traffic lights holding up signs!
