Hundreds rally against Confederate sign on Mississippi flag

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Civil-rights leader Myrlie Evers-Williams, Mississippi-born rapper David Banner and a prominent South Carolina lawmaker are calling on Mississippi to remove the Confederate battle emblem from its state flag.

About 400 people took part in a change-the-flag rally Sunday outside the Mississippi Capitol. No alternative design was proposed, but rally leaders said the flag is racially divisive. Three men holding large flags with various Confederate emblems watched the rally from a distance across the Capitol lawn.

The emblem — a blue X with 13 white stars, over a red field — has been on Mississippi's flag since 1894, and voters chose to keep it in 2001. But the massacre of nine black worshippers in June at a church in Charleston, South Carolina, has renewed the debate about the public display of Confederate symbols.

They can go to hell.

I’m a yankee and the South didn’t start the war. They would have whipped us if they had the same number of men. Lincoln was an idiot who didn’t care about slavery till he could use it as a rallying cry.

And how the @#$@#$ does having 300 bucks entitle you to get out of fighting? what was the logic exactly in the north?

Slavery would have eventually disappeared from the South anyway. Only 5 percent of southerners owned slaves and as cheap labor poured in (like my Italian ancestors) there would have been no need for it and it would have faded. I’m sure there would have been a desire to have it ended after a while also. Wouldn’t have been worth the incessant outcry from the Europeans.

The Confederate flag should be removed why? because of slavery?

Should the American flag be removed because the Indians couldn’t fight well enough to fend us off or because Mexicans were too lazy to conquer Texas?

As we would say on Staten Island to these protesters, “Forget about it and get the @#$#$ out of here before I bust your @#$@#$ing head open”

I’m a direct descendent of a Mississippi soldier in the Civil War and of course the south started the war.

Wagner-Pettus is a precocious 50 somethin year old Mabusite, along with her Husband Gary Pettus. They help former governor William Winter stand up so he can rail against red neck mississippians who have not come to worship the second reconstruction yet. Both are employed by the newprint giant, the Clarion -Ledger which expels good journalists and rewards the asinine butte kissing antics of clowns like Bill Minor, pettus and wagner pettus. With these assclowns’ help the Gannett owned paper has become a staple in the States political arena and in trash cans all over Mississippi. It hangs on to a market share by having no known competition and a populace that still drags it’s feet when it comes to the internet and it’s still (at this time) free flow of ideas (at this point)

Proposed new flag.

This flag does acknowledge the Confederacy. The six stars in the inner circle represent all the nations Mississippi has been part of. Indian, French, Spanish, British, Confederacy and USA.

Current flag.

Original Missssippi flag.

The magnolia flag. Why not use the original.

I'm a Yankee and there is no Confederate "sign" ... on the Mississippi flag ...

like you lick a stamp and put it on an evelope

Most, if not all states had NO flag prior to The War Between The States and it was THAT defining moment in American history (officially 1894 ... it took 25 or so years), that Mississippi proudly declared it's historic participation in a very American political event

The Confederate representation was no more an "addition" than the Magnolia Tree of 1861.

The Mississippi state flag has been unchanged for 121 years

Now ... if someone wants to change or remove something that is on an identifier or a flag ....

I strongly suggest the newcomer

African

Be removed from the word AMERICAN

IT IS A SYMBOL OF HATE, DEATH AND DESTRUCTION

Very. I learn more in FR in a week than I learned in four years of college lol.

Past two weeks:

China fought Russia once.
Israel almost lost the 1973 war and there was a ton of politics behind it.
Russia took Afghanistan because their real goal was Saudi Arabia.
Learned about state flags now.
Got a slew of responses regarding guns.

what a great site..

I'm retired and have SOOOO much time to just surf and read

The problem in America is singular ... no one reads

They're not taught to read, spell or compose

They know nothing of language and communication

And most insidiously, Americans are turned loose on a nation, at an early age, eligible to vote, with more screaming hormonal energy than is healthy for a society that has no where to put them ...

The NEA and Bill Gates have teamed up to take this sovereign nation down .... and the NEA has laid a very good foundation for that destruction.

Kids that don't know how to read or more importantly, never develop a love for reading can never advance our culture

Witness the demise of cursive being removed from Public School curriculum ...

If a child never learns cursive,

He never reads

or

Reading still IS .. fundamental

It’s heartbreaking. Cursive? They wont be able to read the Declaration of Independence except on a laptop?

My sister pulled her kid from public school because they were teaching the sickest things.

White settlers bad, everyone else good.

None of the vital history taught.

More “social” studies.

we’re in a heap of trouble

I'm a subversive ... an embed ...

I got elected to the public school board 2 years ago .... up for re-election in November ...

and have never had so much fun throwing legal, undeniable shit in their faces

I anticipate re-election and have met and groomed a "duck dynasty" kind of guy for HIS election into a vacant seat this November

Big, hairy, loud and right on in his Christianity and patriotic/political understanding .....

and extremely well liked and respected in the community

I should'a done this years ago.

The people of Mississippi can decide what’s on their flag.

The rest of us have more important things to worry about.

Russia didn’t “take” Afghanistan any more than we “took” South Vietnam; the Afghan government asked them for help. That same government, like that of South Vietnam, survived for a few years after the Soviets left.

We still call it an “invasion”, but that was just American propaganda.
