Ted Cruz threatens to kill Ayatollah after Pope warns against violent fundamentalism

On the day after Pope Francis spoke to Congress about the dangers of violent extremism in the name of religious fundamentalism, presidential candidate Ted Cruz, appearing at a Values Voter summit, threatened to murder Iranian Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Texas senator vowed that, if elected, he would “rip to shreds” the Iranian agreement deal recently passed through Congress, and kill the country’s leader if it didn’t give up its nuclear ambitions.

“If the Ayatollah doesn’t understand that, we may have to help introduce him to the 72 virgins,” Cruz said to wild cheers from the audience of conservative Christians.

The senator also stated to great applause that any jihadists trying to enter a military recruiting station would be greeted by the gun barrels of “a dozen marines.”

The comments came one day after the head of the Catholic church urged members of Congress to embrace their better nature and work to not fall prey to violence and fundamentalism:

All of us are quite aware of, and deeply worried by, the disturbing social and political situation of the world today. Our world is increasingly a place of violent conflict, hatred and brutal atrocities, committed even in the name of God and of religion. We know that no religion is immune from forms of individual delusion or ideological extremism. This means that we must be especially attentive to every type of fundamentalism, whether religious or of any other kind.

Venture to say it would go something like this:

.

(CNN)—A former Taliban leader thought to be ISIS' leader in Afghanistan and Pakistan has been killed in a U.S. drone strike, Afghanistan's intelligence agency said Saturday.

In a statement, the National Directorate of Security reported that Hafiz Saeed was killed along with 30 other insurgents in a strike on their compound in the Achin region of Nangarhar Province.

"As a result of efforts made by the NDS, the location of ISIS fighters' gathering was found and the information was shared with the coalition forces who then carried out an airstrike on them," the Afghan agency said.

U.S. Army Col. Brian Tribus said American forces conducted a strike in Achin on Friday against "individuals threatening the force." He did not elaborate.

Don’t we have a law against assassinating the leaders of other countries?

No, we have an Executive Order against it. EOs can be changed or overridden by the new President.

That would really be stupid, wouldn’t it?

We sought to take out Hitler. We sought to take out Sadaam. We sought to take out Osama. When fighting evil ideology, it is always a strategy to take out the leader. History anyone?

That is an asinine comment by the author. Cruz is not threatening to kill the Ayatollah because his religion tells him to. He is threatening to kill the Ayatollah because the Ayatollah is a threat to the US.

Extremism is kidnapping school girls and selling them into slavery and turning them into bombers. Extremism is making snuff videos to terrorize your enemies. Extremism is slaughtering everyone who does not bow to your specific radical ideology. Extremism hijacks airplanes and drives them into buildings, murdering thousands (which Iran reportedly helped fund). On and on. Fighting to end evil is not extremism.

I doubt his mother spoke it, so his father probably didn’t speak it at home.

Understood, but I’d figure anybody who did a college prep program in hs in Texas would come out with Spanish skills. You’d need them to supervise your future employees.

They chose to become Americans? Wow. Bush chose to become a Mexican but won’t give up his US citizenship.

Don’t we have a law against assassinating the leaders of other countries?

It is an executive order, easily rescinded.

...but Cruz is bashing Carson as being unconstitutional for saying we shouldn’t put a muslim in the white house.

No, he is not! He answered a constitutional question and did not comment at all on Dr. Carson. You are being manipulated by the press that deals in half truths to divide and conquer. Don't take the bait, be more discerning and less gullible.

If Cruz is going to play the lawyer for something as obviously true as Carson’s statement, Cruz should play the lawyer full time and consistently.

Why? When asked a legal question he can give a legal answer. When asked if he thinks if the principles that underlie Islam are incompatible with the constitution, I am certain you will find him in harmony with the good Doctor. But he is running for office, his task is to garner attention, raise money, excite his supporters and not make a catastrophic mistake. He gave an answer to a question that was intended to embarrass him, he avoided the intent. He is not bashing Carson, he is letting the issue be Carson's for the moment. If Cruz is president one day, he will have to deal with Islamic countries, it may be wise not to alienate them ahead of time.

Ted can, however, bust out in Latin when applicable.

“If the Ayatollah doesn’t understand that, we may have to help introduce him to the 72 virgins,”

Someone should email to the ayatollah a link to the video of Saddam being hanged.

Can’t agree with the sentiment. That regime change thing does not have a real fine track record where it has been done.

I would imagine that this guy's introduction to his 72 virgins would not be an isolated phenomenon - which is to say, it is likely to be 1 of many thousands, tens of thousands or more, more or less simultaneously. IOW, there won't be anyone left that's wants to run a government there who the US doesn't approve of.

As far as regime change having a bad record - you're correct, but only because we've never gone after the worst regimes, so there's always someone worse. The opposition in Iran is somewhat pro-Western, and if the ayatollahs go, there really isn't anyone worse. So this particular regime change would be for the better.

I have a niece and two nephews who attended school in Texas. If they were required to learn spanish in high school prior to entering college, this is the first I’ve heard of it.

Yeah, you look at how hard line shiites view the Ayatollah as a demi-God of sorts. He’s practically divine to them.

I testified as an expert witness at a product liability trial in Houston back in the 80s. The plaintiff was a Mexican laborer injured in an earthmover accident. A lot of the testimony from their side was in Spanish. I felt like I was the only one in the courtroom who didn’t comprehende.
