Electrifying Photo Takes Internet by Storm: Why Rainbow Lightning Is So Rare
Live Science ^ | Greg McCown

The electrifying image took social media by storm: As of Aug. 14, Greg McCown's photo had garnered more than 1,000 Facebook likes and more than 3,600 retweets.

There's a reason why it went viral: Those types of sightings are incredibly rare. Although 100 lighting bolts strike the Earth every second, the chances of them flashing near a rainbow are slim, said Randall Cerveny, a professor of meteorology at Arizona State University in Tucson.

"Usually, you don't get those two things to line up at the same time," Cerveny said, adding that a desert area like Tucson is more likely to serve up conditions for such a sighting. [Electric Earth: Stunning Images of Lightning]

Why Rainbow Lightning Is So Rare;Photoshop.
There. I said it. Any additional explanations for lack thereof or as basis for conspiracy will merely be redundant.

I can come up with a scenario in which it is possible.

It's not necessarily Photoshop.

It went viral because the rainbow is the symbol of the LGBT peoples. They see this as a sign from the God they don’t believe in as an endorsement of homosexual marriage and Bruce Jenner and all that.

If I am not mistaken, those are the Superstition Mountains in the background. I wonder if the Dutchman’s mine is right in the center of the lightening strike and end of the rainbow. Might be worth investigating.
Send cash and I will use it to buy supplies for the search. Honest. Really. Scout’s Honor.

I have done a lot of realistic image “manipulation” in Photoshop.

This image is not very darned likely a composite .

Arizona State U is in Tempe (Phoenix) - University of Arizona is in Tucson.

Serious mistake if you’re from Zona.

As far as I’m concerned, it can be Photshop. I don’t care.

The weather phenomenon called Virga happens in the desert quite often. I have seen lighting flashes from these phenomenon and the possibility of a rainbow occuring is not out of the realm of possibility.

Arizona for sure. As to exactly where I don’t know. Also I can see that happening. The sun would have to be behind the photographer.
