A funny thing happened to Donald Trump on the way to the first national debate among Republican presidential hopefuls on Fox News. He was transformed from a media-baiting court jester to a legitimate political force. In the process, he cemented his front-runner status among the crowded field of GOP candidates.
This was made possible by the cultural phenomenon that is reality TV. Thanks to the rapid blurring of "real reality" with the "scripted reality" of reality TV, debate viewers had no difficulty fully embracing him as another, over-the-top character in the national reality show that is the presidential race. We have The Bachelor and Bachelorette, The Kardashians and The Real Housewives. Now comes Donald Trump and his (literally) over-the-top hair and exaggerated scowl that would do the Grumpy Old Men from the Muppets proud. And just like the Grumpy Old Men, he revels in heckling the players upon the stage, without ever offering any constructive observations or meaningful insights of his own.
But just like those loosely choreographed reality show performers, the more controversial his behavior, the more popular he becomes.
Rants and Raves
Prior to the Fox News debate, no one was taking Trump seriously -- and that included Trump himself. He was probably just trying to drum up interest for the upcoming broadcast of the Miss America Pageant, which he owns, by spouting a couple of wacky, over-the-top statements. The strategy had worked well for him in the past. However, after he made that first, incendiary remark about Mexican immigrants, things got complicated. Univision dropped its coverage of Miss America; NBC cancelled his Celebrity Apprentice show; businesses began to distant themselves from him....

This has to be mass scale delusion at this point. Wouldn’t it be funny if the man who actually became president was someone that HuffPo put in their entertainment section
Yeah, an all around pathetic piece. Trump also declined the renewal on The Apprentice before he entered the race. What NBC has done since the debate is decide that they can’t find anyone who is enough of a draw to replace Trump right now, so despite earlier claims they’re not going to run the show next year at all now.
And Trump’s immigration comments were “an anti-Mexican insult that inadvertently struck a chord”? Really? Trump made them without meaning to strike a chord?
This whole paragraph is a doozy:
“But experts forget that Sarah Palin never offered concrete solutions for any of her own criticisms of U.S. policies and the ills that plague Washington politics. And that was not a problem with her supporters. It was the same situation with the tea party, which never fully put forward a concrete political platform; yet at its peak, it profoundly impacted the political landscape of America.”
The article is so pathetic that I hate to see FR giving this guy a few more hits over at the HP.
No, it wouldn’t be funny. Trump (D-NY)isn’t a real conservative. He’s a Trojan Horse, a Pied Piper working to lure angry conservatives away.
If that is indeed true, should not the GOP support a real conservative like Ted Cruz, confess their sins, resign en mass and allow this country to return to greatness? EITHER you support what Trump is saying, or we go down the toilet. There is no middle ground. Do it now.
I do support Cruz and would vote for him in a heartbeat. At this time I prefer Walker who is a proven force in politics. The skillset of being a conservative governor in a Dem state and especially one that founded socialism in America is a big deal. He slaughtered them. Walker is fully vetted. We’re not going to find a perfect candidate, but we can find one that’s better than Bush.

This thought keeps coming up in my mind as well. He’s a good entertainer. I’ll give him that. And America des need a wedgie pulling, beotch slapping Biff right now to get it straightened out. He’s at least saying the things that need to be said and he’s not apologizing for it and he doesn’t need to because its the truth.
Why not? These people consider Lena Dunham’s comments to be political endorsement
Away from what exactly?
Trump’s (D-NY) has done a lot of good in his attempt to caricature a conservative. We can lever that. Illegal immigration, bad foreign policy, political cheating, etc. are front and center. Our candidates can and have moved to the right on these issues. Carson is doing yeoman’s work in pointing out liberal hypocrisy in the #blacklivesmatter v. abortion in the black community debate.
We just need to be smart.
Actual proven lifetime conservative politicians like Cruz and Walker.
“We just need to be smart.”
LOL, there is the hitch in your plan, right there.
Correct and don’t I know it.
I’m bookmarking this thread to see how it all plays out over the next year. If nothing else, it will be interesting.
Trump has enough money. He should personally finance a reality show called, “The Veep” and modeled after his Apprentice show. Don’t sell it to a network...put it on YouTube with ALL social media feeds.
Can you say mega-ratings?
Trump is making the reality show “Who Wants To Be A POTUS?” a killer! This is FUN!
He’s to the left of Bush if you look at his actions. Actions not words because anybody can say anything.
How much money has Trump (D-NY) donated to the pro-life cause?
Or to support traditional marriage?
You could well be right.
Cruz is way steps ahead of you.
Abortions increased in Florida every year that Jeb Bush was governor. He told you what you wanted to hear and then abortions increased. There’s your Trojan horse.
