New Mexico tells burgeoning ranks of freeloading Food Stamp recipients to go to work

From the Conservative Tribune:

“Right now American conservatives are arguing over the idea that the US should provide at least a minimum safety net for citizens who fall on economic hard times and need assistance to get back on their feet. One thing conservatives are not arguing about, however, is the idea that too many freeloaders consider such assistance an entitlement and abuse it for as long as they can.

The use of food stamps is a case in point. More and more families use food stamps as their primary means of receiving not only groceries but also questionable items for people supposedly living at the subsidence level, such as tobacco products and alcohol.

Now the state of New Mexico has decided if people want food stamps, they’ll have to start working. Gov. Susana Martinez (R) Gov. Susana Martinez (R)

The state’s Human Services Department has proposed that parents of children more than six years old will have to participate in 80 hours of activities per month, including community service, job searches and training.

This is an expansion of a requirement that had only affected single, healthy individuals, aged 16-60, previously.

The advantages of the expanded requirement are twofold. It will force food-stamp recipients to get training so they can work and take care of themselves and their families. This, in turn, will presumably lead to a reduction in the number of those on food stamps.

‘In addition to reducing recipients’ need for assistance, work programs seek to enhance recipients’ sense of self-worth and esteem,’ the Human Services Department added in its employment and training plan for 2016. ‘Working parents provide an appropriate role model for children in the home, thereby contributing to a reduction in multi-generational dependency.’

But opponents to the plan argue that the new requirement will...

Maybe off topic, but things seems to be getting out of hand with these “entitlement” public assistance programs.

With food assistance and food stamps, more and more schools are feeding kids all their meals. There are summer feeding programs at some schools. Some schools send kids home on Friday afternoon with backpacks full of food for the weekend.

What gets me is that their families are already getting food stamps to feed these kids, yet they are also getting fed through the schools, even during school vacations and summer vacations.

I don’t want anyone to go hungry, but there need to be limits set on all these programs.

If there should be an unemployment and food dole at all, it makes sense for them to be tied not just at the start, which is the common current case (and then the food dole keeps up through inertia). The devil is in the details.

They are better off here on welfare than they would be working in Mexico or Central America. What's the mystery? Food is good. Water is safe. Education is free, medical care is also free and pretty soon they will be able to VOTE for more of the same. They are planning to open a new "6 FLAGS over California" all Mexican.

Push 5 for English is next.

The liberals will say that Gov. Martinez wants to take food out of the mouths of hungry children. They will say she wants kids to be hungry.

That’s how liberals think. Unfortunately the media will pick up on that meme.

I think the fact that liberals control the media and how stories are presented, distorts how our country deals with issues. Paul Ryan’s plan for Medicare is a good example. I’m not sure I want to see a Medicare voucher program, but, the liberals screamed that Ryan wants to throw grandma off a cliff. The media picks up on that meme, so then it ends up that we can’t have any reasoned discussion of what to do to shore up Medicare’s finances.

Sadly the same thing can happen here. The liberals will say Martinez wants kids to go hungry, and then the program may be dropped as a result.

Private charity is better than government social programs because the latter are vulnerable to corruption both in the giver and the receiver.

I don’t believe the Lord utterly despises such programs in the absence of anything else, they do serve to help the “honest poor” (especially when it’s not chiefly their fault they are poor, which is more and more the case with this abusive government) — but when such programs were boosted as a substitute for charity that was asking for trouble.

““Right now American conservatives are arguing over the idea that the US should provide at least a minimum safety net for citizens...”

Well, when you start with a premise such at that, you might, JUST might, be pinpointing why the (C) brand hasn’t been winning.

Just what ELSE *should* the electorate be providing for other Citizens, eh and where/how how does that gel with the Constitution (specifically 5th, 13th)?

I sure hope that was posted in jest? They call us (L) the ‘kooky’ ones?!

“Earned” and “paid for”?? Was ‘old age h-care’ and retirement accounts out of the reach of the Citizen? Where did one sign-up w/out duress?

If they are ‘mine’, why must I need to reach a certain age to utilize? Why must I follow a govt plan on whom I can see, for what and how often? If these are mine, how is it I cannot pass these funds/benefits on to my wife/children upon my passing?

Once anyone can (attempt to) lawyer their way through the 5th Amendment, they can start on the 9th, 10th, 13th...

They are to be lumped into the same category as the others: Ponzi schemes. Not only UNCONSTITUTIONAL, but illegal handouts.

Thanks for that graphic.

I will plead ‘guilty’ of misusing the word “entitlement” in the past. Won’t happen again.

Entitlement for who is the question that is being asked more and more by a growing minority.
The willing recipients of EBT credits, the pie in sky liberals, the politicians and most importantly the business enterprises that are monetarily profiting from the destructive programs will be scrutinized more and more as the available funds become smaller and smaller.
Funds isn’t the right word. Those credits are created with debt. Debt that will grow and grow even as the amount credited to fund such”nobile” or is that” nobility growing” behavoir continues.
Welfare programs and fascism plus debt can only lead to misery.
The US government is no longer a representative republic but a corporate welfare fascist police state.

The state’s Human Services Department has proposed that parents of children more than six years old will have to participate in 80 hours of activities per month, including community service, job searches and training.

Of the adults collecting food stamps upwards of half are already working but don't make enough not to qualify for food stamps. Will they have to put in the 20 hours per week as well? The story doesn't say. And of those who do participate, are they supposed to bring their kids with them to the community service and training.

A lot of them do. A Forbes article said that Walmart employees alone get $6.4 billion a year in public assistance including food stamps. Fast food workers get another $7 billion. Link

I would assume that those who already have full-time jobs are exempt.
