New York hedge-fund billionaire Robert Mercer, who spent more than $1 million trying to elect Republican Art Robinson to Congress in Oregon, is reportedly now putting his fortune to work for Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz.
The National Review reports that Mercer controls one of the four super-PACs that together claim to have raised $31 million to support the Texas senator's presidential bid.
The super-PACs are set up so that they can raise donations of unlimited size. While the leaders of these groups can't coordinate directly with the candidate's campaign they can otherwise conduct a wide range of advertising and other activities aimed at aiding Cruz's candidacy.
On a smaller scale, Mercer, who is highly secretive and gives few interviews, also played a key role in Robinson's 2010 and 2012 campaigns against Rep. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore. Mercer spent more than $1 million in those two years on independent TV ad campaigns attacking DeFazio and praising Robinson, who lost in both years.
Robinson ran unsuccessfully against DeFazio again in 2014, and Mercer gave $1 million to a political action committee that in turn spent heavily on online and direct mail advertising on behalf of the latter.
Mercer, who was one of the largest individual political donors in the country last year, has also backed Robinson's scientific institute in Cave Junction, giving nearly $1 million in 2011.
Robinson said Mercer subscribed to a newsletter written by Robinson that, among other things, argues that global warming was an unwarranted fear -- a belief that Mercer reportedly shares.
So two strikes against him, he’s Conservative and a denier of globull warming. How many articles do they write like this about wealthy liberals donating to demonrats?
Good news. I donated to Art Robinson, a good man, and he would have made a better congressman than that dinosaur who’s been in office since the civil war.
I'm glad Mercer is in the Cruz camp.
Cool. I’m glad the best candidate in either party has a chance against the public employee unions and chamber of commerce picks.
Agreed. I’m so excited to have Ted Cruz running. Walker is also a great candidate. If Hillary runs, there cannot be a much worse candidate than her. It should be our win this time around, assuming Republicans don’t do something stupider than usual.
Encouraging development.
Cruz will be on the ticket, what spot remains to be seen.
The goal is COMPLETE ANNIHILATION of the CPUSA and it’s front organizations, unions and illegal immigration groups at the top of the target list.
Shutting down legal and illegal immigration for 20 years is also a top priority.
AMERICA FOR AMERICANS 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THIS.
.
“How many articles do they write like this about wealthy liberals donating to demonrats?”
If they do write them, it’s to celebrate the people giving to the Dems.
Who is Tom Steyer and George Soros for 100, Alex.
The left has more billionaires at their beck n call than any conservative will ever have
There; fixed it.
Haven’t heard of him.
Art Robinson would have made a good congressman in comparison with ultra progressive DeFasio.
