Sunday brunch was painfully disrupted for diners nationwide when protesters occupied upscale restaurants and read off the names of black victims of police violence. The #BlackBrunch demonstrators targeted eateries that serve predominantly affluent, white clientele and staged sit-ins in New York City, San Francisco, Oakland, Baltimore, and other cities across the country. As discomforted brunchers lifted mugs of pour-over coffee to their lips, protesters recited the names of black people killed by the police like Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. Although some protesters encountered hostility from restaurant managers, most of them witnessed supportive gestures from the diners.
Activists like graduate student Wazi Maret Davis, say they were deliberate in their choice of restaurants, selecting places they considered were white spaces which included an Oakland Apple Store. The point is to confront non-black people with realities that black people are confronted with every day.

In those particular communities where theyre surrounded by money, or theyre surrounded by white folks, they dont have to engage with whats going on in black communities, and they can easily disassociate from that and pretend its not happening, said Davis to Spook Magazine. So we say, no. Were going to take up space in your community, let you know whats happening outside this. We exist, and were here.
The protest was modelled after the historic lunch counter sit-ins that occurred during the civil rights movement. Its poignant that these contemporary sit-ins are taking place in urban spaces that are rapidly gentrifying. Of course, the action was virulently critisized by right-wing and conservative blogs and Twitter users. One former NYPD officer named John Cardillo issued a particularly hateful Twitter missive with a photo of him holding a gun pointed at the camera. I'm really enjoying these Eggs Benedict so move along now. #BlackBrunchNYC, he wrote.

the customers do not look happy , me thinks they’ll be going elsewhere next Sunday
nationwide ? Only in Democrat Held Territory
Former NYPD cop Cardillo was on CNN/Don Lemon tonight. The three black “activists” put against him were just BALLISTIC with anger over his gun picture. They think the marches and restaurant disruptions are great, but the gun photo is just beyond beyond.
My question would be, “Why did not the restaurant management or owners call the police? Since as far as known, none did , it appears that the restaurant owners and managers were a part of the “protest”.
Do that crap in my neighborhood, and the guns won’t be pointing at cameras. Seeing as how in most Sunday brunch places, at least every other table will be seated with well armed CCW holders.
As a side note for these vermin: my wife and I believe in equality. That’s why we have caliber and magazines in common.
new scarf for brunch, $20
brunch $35
getting what you voted for??? priceless...
Guilty
Just read her first paragraph...does she really think Trayvon Martin was killed by a police officer?

No respect for others or their businesses is the common theme of these people. Protest, disrupt, destroy establishments that have nothing to do with whatever they are upset about.
bump
In the New York account, white patrons were told “you have no right to eat here”.
One black agitator taunted white patrons and grabbed one by the wrist (which is sufficient to charge with assault). (S)he then blogged about panicking a white person by touching him with black skin.
So let me get this straight. Pro-life Protestors are not go on an abortion clinic property and “harass”, yet these liberals hypocrite can go on a property and harass people.
Try that violence and intimidation in the Russian Tea Room. If the bigots of color really want a race war, then they should panic about what they'll be up against even from a less wealthy polity. A break from the Tea Room. Now imagine splitting the current remains of the US military across racial lines, and enjoy the consequences.
Nicely done!
What’s ironic is that if these protesters had done what the lunch counter protesters of the sixties had done — that is, move into “white space” by sitting down and ordering a meal — no one would bat an eyelash. Instead they have to come in and be disruptive to make their point, whatever it is.
A really pithy response by the restaurant manager would have been to have simply offered them a table. What would they have done then?
Looks like the author of this piece would have preferred beheadings.
FTA: The point is to confront non-black people with realities that black people are confronted with every day.

Yeah, just last week, I walked into a restaurant to disrupt black people who were peacefully going about eating their breakfast. This is beyond stupid.
I really like the guy/gal thing pretending to read...
