The Good Old Days (when guns were less lethal)
Gun Watch ^ | 23 October, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

There were anti-aircraft cannons and ammunition for sale through the mail back then as well.  I  remember buying my first pistol, a Colt Woodsman, across state lines without paperwork,  for cash, just before the Gun Control Act of 1968 went into effect, at age 17.  It was all legal, and the crime rate was lower than it is now, even after it has dropped by half in the last 20 years.

Not only were guns more available, but the crime rate was lower. As gun control was implemented in the 70's and 80's, the crime rate shot up. As the legal ability to carry guns was restored in the latter 90's and on, the crime rate has come down almost to the rate of the late 50's and early 60's.

Back in the 40-50’s you could still buy a working Civil War cannon or Galting Gun from Bannerman’s and the ammunition to fire in them.

The statistics on violent crime in England is unbelievable. Rapes, robberies, etc. are huge compared to the U.S.

Probably 75% of the crimes involving firearms today happen with the ‘gang-bangers’ or drug related violence in the cities and ghettos, where ironically most all gun ownership is straight up illegal, or ownership is so difficult most law abiding people don’t bother to have them.

If the useless drug prohibition ended, “gun violence” would probably revert back to where it was during the 1950s almost overnight. However, that would reduce the police state, and too many interests have built livelihoods, jobs, and their entire existence around it. The same will be the case with the so-called “war on terror”. Both together will lead to the death of liberty in this country as we know it....

I know many here probably disagree, but it’s the dammed truth, whether your ideology agrees with it or not.

“typo should be Gatling not Galting”

Yes. ‘Galting’ would imply that it had stopped working. /Ayn Rand

That is the key. Irresponsible people will always find a way. BTW, I wonder what caliber the axe was used in the NYC attack the other day.

I love that add. The only thing I like better is the picture of a cowboy in a saloon with a Mauser C96. Wish I could still find that picture!

If guns were less lethal before the 1968 Gun Control Act then clearly the problem is the 1968 Gun Control Act.

The Cubans were semi-secretly training in the Florida everglades to overthrow Castro.

Two of the guys were reckless, driving a station wagon with their BAZOOKA uncovered in the back:

Cop pulls them over for speeding, sees that monster and prepared to arrest:

The legal-savvy driver informs him that since it was a single-shot weapon, it was perfectly legal.

The incredulous officer radios that tidbit (which was true, at the time):

NO ARREST, FREE TO GO.

I worked with an older guy in North Carolina who told me that he was REQUIRED to bring a gun to his high school because shooting was part of P.E. No one ever got hurt or shot. Of course, people were “different” then...probably generally better and smarter - because they had to be so.

When I was thinking about taking the position at Yuma Proving Ground, I looked up books on Yuma. One detailed a gun fight that occurred in the early 1900’s.

The bar tender pulled out a Colt .45 revolver and started shooting up the place. A cowboy said everything was fine until a round creased his butt as he crouched behind an overturned table.

Then he pulled out a 9mm Luger and emptied the magazine into the bar tender, who fell over, dead.

It was a great .45 v. 9mm story, but it was in a book in the post library in Ft. Clayton, Panama, and I have not been able to find it since...

When I first moved to Texas in 1975, most everyone who drove a truck more than likely had a gun rack with guns in the back window. It never did bother me. But then, they sort of disappeared. I guess they were easy to steal.

Disagree? Not at all.

Your post was excellent and, unfortunately, the truth.
