Letter: Feds treat Ebola like a hangnail

I do not understand how the U.S. leaders can poo poo the potential threat of a pandemic. If they're trying to prevent panic, they're doing a poor job of it. My self, I'd feel more secure if I saw some effort at containment. Aparently none of the "highly trained" people ever read a history book. The Black Plague was too far back for these people to think about, but the world wide influenza epidimic of the early 1900's should be close enough for a look. This was a time of coal fired steam ships. Most travelers would have died weeks before they got here. And yet the virus arrived and killed an untold number of Americans. You only need to go to Villiage Island or old Klinkwan to see the results. Two or three children buried in the same grave, parents beside them. That's just local. Nation wide, it was worse. World wide, it was horrible.

And the Feds treat Ebola like a hangnail. Can they possibly be that stupid? A virus knows no race, no color, no age, no gender, no sexual prefrence. It just kills....

If none of the people who had the closest contact with this guy gets Ebola, I am going to have to wonder if this is another Ohoax.

Something is off in this whole thing. The careless and nonchalant attitude of the CDC and all.

It is either that or they really want Ebola to spread and it ain’t cooperating with them.

Umm. The flu didn't come here. It seems to have originated here, specifically in Kansas.

They dont want to fix it. Period.

They want chaos so later they can ask for more money. And THAT is what it is all about.

And the Spanish flu only had a 10-20% mortality rate as in 10-29% of those infected died.

There are several theories, but the most commonly accepted ones have the flue originating at one or another place in Kansas.

Given the limited technology of the time, they didn’t have the ability to definitively tell on disease from another.

It might be perhaps the author is referring to the flu traveling to our area, as we are on an island surrounded by islands. A bit ambiguous though.

Yes, they can. They don’t want to ban or even quarantine people form ebola ravaged countries because of political correctness. One can only hope that it is those sons of bitches who die first of ebola.

I think that given the poor medical care infrastructure in Africa, plus the generally inhospitable economic conditions and perpetual lack of quality food, the typical African population is physically stronger and more resistance to disease than the typical US population where technology saves our weaker members who readily reproduce.

The weaker members of the African population have died of other causes.

The mortality rate for Ebola among the Africans is about 50%

Mortality over here may be much higher once our healthcare systems become overwhelmed.

This is an idea based on sheer conjecture and 63 years of being taken care of by a high technology healthcare system.

I'll add two thoughts:

1) We are an insanely mobile society. If a guy in Dallas has Ebola, there's a good change that it will show up in Chicago, Boston and San Francisco. There is a risk of many brush fires in diverse areas, because we are always on the move.
2) Our healthcare is very good, but very expensive. We would certainly want to care for people, and quarantine people, and sanitize locations, and the costs will just go up and up and up. That might be a big problem.
