Op-Ed Hiking L.A.'s Minimum Wage Is A No-Brainer Minimum wage Fast food workers protest low pay, demanding a $15/hour minimum wage outside during a two-day nationwide strike. (Los Angeles Times) By ELI BROAD
Raising the minimum wage isn't just good for workers: It's good for business Could you support your family in Los Angeles on the current minimum wage? Raising L.A.'s minimum wage will be a win all around
Of all major cities in the country, Los Angeles has the highest percentage of population living in poverty. After decades of slow job growth and stagnant wages, 28% of Angelenos 1 million people today live below the poverty line. Our city's African American and Latino residents face disproportionately higher rates of poverty. The situation is heartbreaking and unconscionable.
In the very short term, 600,000 people would be lifted out of poverty, and wages could rise by as much as $6 billion.
That's why I'm supporting the plan that Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Monday to raise the minimum wage to $13.25. The men and women earning minimum wage deserve, at the very least, a paycheck that enables them to support their families. An increase in the minimum wage would not only be good for low-wage workers. It would also be good for the city, good for the economy and, in the long term, good for business. It is, simply put, the right thing to do

Whenever a liberal says something is good for business, it is never good for business.

And ti will only cost 1.2 million jobs or more. Hey, that McD’s dollar menu? Now the 5 dollar menu (for the few that stay in the State — just ask SF).
The disaster will be unimaginable.
And delicious.
This is how liberals and some big corporations kill off a lot of small business competitors.
A lot of small businesses will move out of Los Angeles. Maybe just outside the city limits.
Eli Broad doesn’t care whether his lunch goes up in price, it’s on the expense account.
When Bush was president, fast food positions were “McJobs”. Now that Obama is president they are careers.
Back door way of closing down “unhealthy” food outlets?
Uh, NO probably not, because if I have a family, I'd have to be some kind of irresponsible POS to even THINK that making minimum wage can support them.
I'd hopefully be well into some kind of career, if I'm bringing kids into the world.
NEVER accept a liberal's premise. NEVER.
The minimum wage has always been a starter wage, for people beginning their work life.
You know, like teenagers.
It was never intended to be able to "support a family".
It will be good for the business that builds the push button screens to replace the idiot that’s not worth $13-$15 because they can’t get an order right.
Most people just don’t get that fact. If gas goes from $3.50 to $15.00 a gallon it doesn’t even hit the radar for Broad, Buffett, Gore, etc. The item is such a small percentage of their excessive income they can run their mouths about raising wages, taxes and prices because it affects them so little.
And notice how instead of complaining about no "real jobs" under Obama, liberals just want the pay rate for McJobs to be WAY more than they are worth.
Why Obama has an approval rating in the 40's is a miracle.
ANY other POTUS would be running in the 20% range, tops.
Is Eli Broad invested in the kiosk business? Hmmm?
Repeal the minimum wage. Teenage unemployment goes down. Crime goes down.
You are exactly right.
It’s not the McDonald’s or Walmart or Lowes that suffer.
It’s the (few remaining) mom and pop operations that really get slammed.
Eli,
How much did you pay your low skilled workers at your multi-billion dollar corporations?
Bump
“Is Eli Broad invested in the kiosk business”
There’s an angle somewhere or he’s just an idiot.
True. Ted Kennedy created this 300 million population with his Immigration Reform Act in mid 1960 that essentially shut down all immigration from where all Americans had previously come from. Kennedy flooded the USA with the poorest from every part of the world. Kennedy created the real problem and we have many more millions waiting with hands out and hoping to cross our border for a free ride. John Kennedy was 180 different.
you aren’t expected to support a family on minimum wage...it is for brginning workers and has worked for years. If you are trying to support your family on this wage, it is time to get off your dead butt and IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS...go to vocational school, take an online course in anything, serve an apprentiship, stop expecting someone to give you something for doing nothing .
Let's use McDonald's as an example. If you jack up the minimum wage, all the minimum wage jobs that led to your burger - slaughtering, packaging, transporting, delivery of restaurant products, janitorial of the restaurant, production of McDonald's uniforms and a bazillion other things get jacked up too.
Does anyone with a brain think the business owner is NOT going to raise his prices to offset that?
