Don't know if this is allowed on FR, but I'll try it.

A rally in support of Israel and in support of fundamental freedoms in Canada, will take place tomorrow, July 31, 2014 at 6:00 PM, in front of Calgary City Hall. Last week, two pro-Israel supporters were physically attacked by a number or pro-Hamass demonstrators, in front of City Hall. Police had several day's notice of the two rallies, yet were conspicuously absent from the event, leading to an attacks by several young, swarthy complexioned pro-Hamass ralliers. After more than one week, there have been no public announcements or comments about this assault by either the Calgary Police Service nor the mayor, Naheed Nenshi.

Part of the reason for this rally, is to take back the streets of Calgary from thugs who feel the need to silence the voices of those with opposing views.

That WILL get ugly. Prepare yourself mentally now. I don’t know much about the demographics or attitudes in Calgary, but I do know that when headchoppers aren’t dealt with directly and harshly, they’re emboldened. I honor you for your bravery and take any bad things I may have said about Canadians.

Thank you for your comments and advice. I am not the organizer and only found out about the rally last night. I am passing this info amongst friends and acquaintances. I believe that there may be a few FReepers in Calgary who might not know about this yet. Mayor Nenshi is, above all, a publicity hound politician, so he WILL have to do something about ensuring our RIGHT to a peaceful rally. Sun News Network will be out in full force to cover the rally, as Ezra Levant, a SNN journalist, commentator and lawyer, will be MC'ing the rally. If Nenshi keeps the police away, like he did last week and the thugs attack, coverage will be nation-wide, and possibly more wide-spread. Such action will most certainly cost him more votes that the ones he gets from his fellow Muslims in Calgary.

The fact that the CPS and the Mayor's office are not prepared to defend freedom of speech, freedom of association and freedom from attack based upon one's political or religious view, is unacceptable. While our rights and freedoms that are guaranteed under our Constitution, and Charter of Rights and Freedoms, they do differ from those of the US. Among our 'fundamental rights' (Section of the Charter) are: "Section 2: which lists what the Charter calls "fundamental freedoms" namely freedom of conscience, freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of belief, freedom of expression, freedom of the press and of other media of communication, freedom of peaceful assembly, and freedom of association." In addition, Section 7 guarantees the right to life, liberty, and security of the person.

I know Canada has some gun right, but how did they justify so many regulations with “right to security of the person”. In the US, as you know, judges just ignore the Constitution.

As I am not a gun owner, I am not certain of all the details of ownership in Canada I believe that long guns are allowed without registering the weapon, but one must pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course, (CFSC for short), submit an application form and then wait for several weeks to get a Possession and Acquisition Licence. I think that is the process, but there are Canadian FReepers who are gun owners and could give you better info. As far as handguns and semi-autos, they are ‘restricted’, pretty much limited to police, certain security guards (armoured cars, etc.) and military personnel. I believe, but I’m not certain, that they are normally required to be kept at the station/base when the person is not on the job. As far as bringing a gun into Canada, you would be wise to check with the Canadian Embassy or Consulate.

I think there is a focus on different rights in the two countries because of how they were founded. Of course the US was founded by revolution. As so many felt they were oppressed by the Crown, they revolted by gun and it became a key part of the US Constitution, enshrining gun rights as a means to defend against oppressive government.

In Canada, it was a different process to rights and freedoms. Democracy in British Isles evolved over time, as the power of the Monarch devolved. This was in large part, as a result of both the influx of Revolutionary War refugees from the US with their more liberal ideas, and as a result of trying to prevent similar revolutions in British colonies. The idea of ‘Responsible Government’ arose in the 1830s, after the several failed American invasions during the War of 1812. By 1867, when Canada became a country, the Monarchy was only just a figurehead, with the House of Commons (elected body) being the power. There was no desire to copy all the ideas of the American Revolution.

As the Canadian nation arose peacefully, through governments and people working together, the perceived ‘need’ for arms to protect against bad government, was not there. In addition, because of invasions during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, the US was viewed warily, especially in light of ‘Manifest Destiny’.
