Drivers traveling into or through Baltimore on Interstate 95 are going to encounter a construction project that will replace the highways concrete deck along the 4.4 miles between the Fort McHenry Tunnel and Exit 50 at Caton Avenue.
Nothing like this has happened since the tunnel opened in 1985. If your summer vacation drives take you through Baltimore, if you plan to see the Orioles or Ravens, or will be visiting the Inner Harbor, Fells Point or Fort McHenry, you will want to be aware of this work, which is scheduled to end in 2016.
The Maryland Transportation Authority project will shift lanes, reduce lane widths, eliminate shoulders, temporarily close ramps and require some detours.

Since no sane person actually goes into Baltimore on a regular basis, this should not really affect any of us.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Is the Inner Harbor still a good neighborhood? I thought I hezrd the gangs were moving in and scaring off tourists????
Adding sniper positions ?

So far it is nice. They really cleaned up that area. I drive through while going to the VA.
I’ve read about incidents of young punks running around causing trouble in that area.
Replacing concrete bridge decks. But you could always make a suggestion to the highway department. Never hurts to prepare.
Any Maryland Freepers?
I will be driving through Baltimore on I-95 around 3am in 4 weeks.
Should I take I-895 (Harbor Tunnel Throughway)?
If you stay within a block or two of the harbor it is relatively safe (I've been told) but beyond that the law of the jungle kicks in. I wouldn't doubt that assemblages of gangbanger yutes occasionally foray into the tourist areas, though. We didn't see any our last couple of visits.
At 3am, Fort McHenry tunnel should be fine. The Harbor Tunnel doesn’t add any time to the trip.
*sigh*Well I live in Baltimore and commute to Alexandria every (work) day so this will affect me.
Great. Just when I didn’t think the commute could get any worse. Heaven help me.
Thanks. Haven’t been there in years, though may be visiting family there in the near future.
I was afraid that the youth gangs were encroaching. Hopefully law enforcement is trying to keep them out of tourist areas. Nothing kills tourism like youth gangs. Even if they aren’t attacking, too many gang types just hanging around will scare off visitors.
I just rolled through a few hours ago. Wasnt a problem. 3 am you roll right through.
That may not be a good idea. They could already be replacing the viaduct just east of the Harbor Tunnel, which means the road will be narrowed to three lanes (1 in one direction, 2 in the other).
I gotta say, having lived in Maryland for over 50 years, that they know how to build roads here. Both in terms of quality and process. When I drive in other states, especially Pennsylvania, I’m shocked at the poor roads and the stupid methods they use for keeping traffic moving during road construction. That’s not to say that there are never any road construction issues in Maryland. But I really believe they do a better job here than in almost any other state I’ve driven in.
That being said, my wife and I will be moving to West Maryland when the western counties secede. We value freedom over good roads.
The HT is actually faster than the Fort Mac ... but sometimes overnight they close a tube and its two way
“Scheduled to end in 2016”.
Wanna bet?
Like Boston’s big dig this too will take double or triple the time and cost.
Union job.

I do. I live here. I like it for the most part.
