On this date in 1794, Congress authorized the creation of a permanent United States Navy and the construction of six frigates. The US Navy today is the most powerful on the planet, deploying almost 300 ships, including 10 aircraft carriers, around the world.
There's a damning indictment of the Clinton, Bush, and 0bama administrations ...
Yeah .... I thought we were being, or have been, outnumbered by the chicoms
Clinton kept that ball rolling, W slowed, halted, and then started it the other way, Obama has resumed the decline.
As to the original Navy, if you want the best expose on those frigates, read this story about the USS Constitution.
It's one heck of a story. I keep that book in our Libraey, displayed next to me 1:196 wood model of the ship.
The USS Constitution is still an officially commissioned vessel in the US NAvy. I have visited her in Boston and would recommend anyone to do the same. They have an entire forest of the proper trees for her maintenance growing in New England.
The Constitution is amazing, though I did conclude the sailors must have been quite short gauging by the knots on my forehead after just a brief visit :o)
