Who’s Selling Credit Cards from Target?
Krebs on Security ^ | 24 DEC 13 | Krebs

The previous two posts on this blog have featured stories about banks buying back credit and debit card accounts stolen in the Target hack and that ended up for sale on rescator[dot]la, a popular underground store. Today’s post looks a bit closer at open-source information on a possible real-life identity for the proprietor of that online fraud shop.

Rescator[dot]la is run by a miscreant who uses the nickname Rescator, and who is a top member of the Russian and English language crime forum Lampeduza[dot]la. He operates multiple online stores that sell stolen card data, including rescator[dot]la, kaddafi[dot]hk, octavian[dot]su and cheapdumps[dot]org. Rescator also maintains a presence on several other carding forums, most notably cpro[dot]su and vor[dot]cc.

(A private message on cpro[dot]su between Rescator and a member interested in his card shop. Notice the ad for Rescator’s email flood service at the bottom; this will become important as you read on.)

In an Aug. 2011 thread that has since been deleted, Rescator introduced himself to the existing members of vor[dot]cc, a fairly exclusive Russian carding forum. When new members join a carding community, it is customary for them to explain their expertise and list previous nicknames and forums on which they have established reputations.

More info at site, with lots of page captures pics and links, too much to post here.

I feel secure knowing that I never participated in Target's scanners in their stores by swiping any cards through it, but I know a lot of people are probably going to be severely impacted by the theft.

I note as well that I posted quite recently that the method of the theft was probably russian mafia given their history, and that now seems more and more likely to be the case.

Very, very nice job of investigative journalism.

Yes, Krebs seems to have done quite a thorough job of searching out the miscreant and substantiating what his search has discovered. Good to know someone is not letting this go.

In a sane world, our heavily-politicized bureaucrat-encrusted central government would be recalling ambassadors and going frosty, even playing brinkmanship games with the Russians until these bastards were delivered to us in irons.

But, this small potatoes prexy hasn't the marbles to be president.

I haven't any sympathy with 'Target,' who may be in league with the church of satan, for all I know. But this kind of criminality is defines criminality. It sends the message to the world that America is top-heavy with rent-seekers, unable to defend itself. It invites attack.

I hear you, mate, but to a professional politician (*spit*) there really is no capitol to be gained by such an action. It is petty cash to them, affects none of the contributors to their campaign it seems, and as evidenced by the actions of even the Russian diplomat's wives and families the theft of any monies from the USA is viewed with a tolerant eye.

Plus, people who have had their accounts drained can not realistically be expected to contribute at all to their campaign coffers, now can they? Add to which, what small percentage of them all are actually registered votors for them?

I don't know what the big deal is.

Obama had money printed and put enormous debt on our backs which equals taking out credit cards in our names which we can not use but we which we are responsible for.

Yep, $40.000.00 per person per year while Obama is in office, is the debt we will owe with no credit card company guarantee to bail us out.

I don’t understand why Target didn’t immediately put a 10 Million Dollar arrest and capture bounty on the ring leaders head and million dollar bounty for any subordinate that worked in the US installing the software that stole the information.

It is costing them over 100 million in lost sales and hurting their reputation beyond repair. This would have been a great first step. None of thieves would feel safe. There is no loyalty between friends if the number is high enough.

“There is no loyalty between friends if the number is high enough.”

We assume that the reporter was the first with the info. Perhaps. Perhaps not. Perhaps Target is already aware and taking action to remedy the situation.

I wonder if the fraud originated in Boston where there is a large toxic Russian population. Ergo, the Boston Marathon attack.

I meant publicly offer the reward for PR and damage control. Also, if it was an inside job the preps would have been caught the first day with a super large reward.

I don’t think the Russians and the Chechens are on such warm, close terms.

If federal agencies were not so busy spying on the Tea Party they could hunt this individual down and “disappear” him.
