Senate GOP blocks Dems from advancing $1.1T debt hike
The Hill ^ | October 12, 2013 | Alexander Bolton

Senate Republicans on Saturday blocked a bid by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) to extend the nation’s debt limit until after the 2014 midterm elections.

In an 53-45 vote, the Senate failed to win the 60 votes necessary to advance the debt-limit measure to a floor debate. The bill would increase the federal debt by an estimated $1.1 trillion.

Every Democrat supported the measure, though Reid switched his vote at the end to preserve the right to bring the motion up for another vote later.

Republicans criticized the legislation as politically transparent. Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) and two other centrist GOP senators have instead proposed raising the debt-limit only until Jan. 31, 2014.

During the vote, a large number of Democratic senators huddled around Collins (R-Maine). Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), the other two GOP centrists backing the Collins plan, joined her.

Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), Joe manchin (D-W.Va.), Joe Donnelley (D-Ind.), Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) were just a few of the others in the huddle.

Reid warned ahead of the vote that allowing the debt limit to expire would send the nation’s economy into a tailspin.

“What a sad day for America,” he said. “They’re voting to not allow us to even debate whether the debt ceiling should be raised. Are they afraid of that? Do they just want this to go away?

“Each hour that goes by, we’re closer to a calamity for our country,” he added.

The Obama administration has set an Oct. 17 deadline for expanding borrowing authority.

A group of Senate Republicans say the debt limit should not be raised unless President Obama agrees in advance to budget negotiations that would reform entitlement programs.

Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) warned the stock market will begin to plunge unless Congress acts this weekend. He said millions of Americans will see their savings decline.

“This irresponsible action, sadly, is likely to create a decline in value of your hard-earned savings,” he said. “It can be avoided. What would it take? Six Republicans. The Democrats are ready to move forward.”

The hysteria is just more Dimocrat lies:

"Ignore what you hear and read in the news. The federal government actually reached the legal debt ceiling about four months ago. Since then, the government has been financing its monthly budget deficit by stealing/borrowing money from other government funds, like the federal government employees’ pension fund. In about two weeks, the government will run out of tricks to keep operating as if nothing has happened. If the debt ceiling is not raised by then, the government has to balance its budget......"

The RINO Republicans hypocrisy is utterly stunning. On some bills they are happy to join with the Communists and vote for cloture (60 votes to close debate)

What makes this Senate bill so different that these same RINOs, including my Senator, the clueless Cornyn, vote no on cloture for this bill?

No, they know that if it gets to the floor, it only requires the Democrats to vote for it to get it passed. Such misleading drivel.

It has reached a point when I watch Senate committee hearings on
subjects she is involved in, I simply click stop and move over her
bullshit the same I do for most Democrats during these CSPAN videos.
There was a time I used to at least try to give her a fair shot. Those days are over.

What's it all mean, Ernest???

It may be "the world's greatest deliberative body," but their stupid rules are so complex by design that they keep the citizens in a constant state of cornfusion!!!

Reminds me of that old song... "First you say you will, and then you won't!!! Then you say you do, and then you don't!!! You're undecided now, so what'er ya gonna do???"

As an occasional light-hearted sexist, I must say that this has gotten much worse since "The Year(s) of the Woman" election(s) of so many liberal women who militantly maintain their militant right to change their militant mind(s)!!! (snort!)

Obama's concerned about raising the debt ceiling---NOT b/c the US is in jeopardy. Obama is afraid his billion dollar WH lifestyle is in jeopardy----the non-stop Air Force One flights, the pricey vacays--at the Vineyard, on the ski slopes, to Europe, etc etc etc.

Michele's 24 assistants have to be paid and her designer clothes and diamond collection require millions of tax dollars.

Mrs O never hesitates to flaunt her diamond collection.

Mrs O wore her pricey diamond bangles (bought on a govt salary?) at a Texas DNC fund-raiser, attended by "tolerant and compassionate" Dems....raising big bucks to keep Mr O in office so he could work for "the poor."

Mrs diamond Gothic cuff was priced at $15,350 set with 2.17 carats in diamonds and the Quatrefoil bracelet at $11,800 set with 1.73 carats in diamonds. (Excerpt) Read more at houston.culturemap.com.

DEM FUND-RAISER SCHTICK Typical "tolerant and compassionate" lib/prog: get struggling taxpayers to subsidize endless federal do-good programs designed "for the poor" ....... and make a buck on it for themselves, and to keep the party in power.

GET OUT THE CRYING TOWEL Obama has canceled two stops on his long-planned trip to Asia because of the partial government shutdown. (Excerpt) Read more at bigstory.ap.org ...

Too bad.

Let's not forget Oboner's $100 million tax-paid trip to Africa---which does not include the hundreds of millions in "foreign aid" he gave the oil-rich suckers.

=============================================

The WH grifters are still living large---sucking off the backs of struggling taxpayers. Mrs Grifter still has 24 tax-paid assistants at her beck and call.

NRO tallied what taxpayers are paying for the Ohaha's living in the White House: $1.4 billion per year: Air Force One ($181,757 per hour), executive chef ($100,000 per year), three full-time White House calligraphers ($277,050 per year for the trio), chief of staff to the president’s dog ($102,000 per year), Ohaha's royal motorcade ($2.2 million). $100 million alone for the African apology tour.

==========================================

$1.4 BILLION is the current annual cost of the White House — just in household expenses, not including US policy operations for which the WH exists-- administered by some 900 parasites--- policy staff recruited by Ohaha.

Ohaha vacations cost taxpayers millions---- (the low estimate for Ohaha's Hawaii vacay was $4 million, but the true cost is probably five times that); multiple trips to the Vineyard, skiing trips.

The first family’s yearly health-care costs are $7 million; more than $6 million is spent on the White House grounds each year. Transportation costs were a staggering $346 million last year.

The O' kids were flying aroound to the Bahamas and Sun Valley.....while American kids were shut out of the WH supposedly due to sequestration Secret Service cutbacks. The O's galivanting teen daughter was spotted in NY---with girlfriends---dining at the pricey Buddakan, scoffing up rock shrimp, edamame dumplings, short ribs, lobster fried rice........replete w/ five Secret Service guards dining nearby, while students her age were denied access to the people's house.
