Shingles : Don't take chances

Posted on 09/04/2013 1:59:18 PM PDT by deputytess

Hey Folks, I recently recovered from shingles.Still have a bit of nerve pain. I was very lucky and managed to avoid the worst through early intervention. I just want to encourage anyone out there who's had chicken pox to talk to their doctor about the shingles shot. You don't want to go through what I went through. This especially goes for my fellow "Boomers". Stress is one of the main triggers for shingles and we 50 somethings have a lot of stress. God bless you all and stay healthy.

I’ve never known ANYONE who has or had the shingles.

Me. Several of my friends. And several of my wife's friends.

All were in their 50's, usually on the low side.

My brother had it a few years ago. He was in severe pain with it.

I decided to get the shot, so I got it at Walgreens early this year. It cost about $200, but insurance paid $150.

I actually had Shingles back in the ‘70s... don’t remember much about it other than it was a pain.

Can I get it again? Just asking.

I got it at a store. I think it cost $15-25. For goodness sake, some things are worth spending the bucks for.

That must be after insurance, or some other form of reimbursement. It's $200, otherwise.

My wife is unsure if she ever had the pox, but I told her to get the shot anyway since she must have had some exposure from other kids.

Anyone ever heard of contraindications to getting the shot if you did not have the pox? Would not want her to get something unwanted.

If you get shingles the doctor visit and the meds will cost as much as the shot.

Hint: Get the shot.

Chances are you won’t get it again, but you can. That’s what a doctor told my mother so my mom got the shot after her attack just in case.

You can, but it's unlikely.

The probability of shingles goes down significantly after the first outbreak, then again after a second outbreak.

Since I've already had it, my doctor doesn't believe I need the vaccine. The possibility of having another outbreak is less than the effectiveness of the vaccine.

Your mileage may vary. Ask your doctor.

I’ve never known ANYONE who has or had the shingles. And just about everyone I know of has had the chickenpox.

Is it that prevalent that you need to worry about it?
******************************************************************
Perhaps when you, and your “peers”, are a little older you’ll start knowing folks who have had shingles. And it can be very painful and long lasting if you’re unlucky. Luckier folks get it but, for them, it’s more bearable and of shorter duration.

I also got the pneumonia shot the same day.

It cost zero with Medicare, because it was covered under Part B, IIRC.

It may have cost *you* zero, but there's no free lunch and there are no free medications.

Earlier this week, I called my husband at work so he could give the HSA payment information for our son’s new glasses, and I reminded him (again) that he’d said he was going to get me the HSA payment card so I didn’t have to call him all the time or bring home receipts that he never files for reimbursement. (He says he has ADD, yadda yadda yadda.)

Yesterday he told me the card should come in the mail within 14 days, so as soon as it does, I’ll go into some drugstore with “We have the shingles vaccine!” on its sign and get it.

This means that you'll get shingles 114 times (38 x 3).

It is written.......

:-)
