Could the GOP lose a Senate seat in Georgia? (false panic)

Georgia Republicans are becoming increasingly worried that a divisive primary coupled with a strong Democratic candidate might lead to a loss of the Senate seat of retiring Saxbe Chambliss.

The Hill: Recent polling shows the two candidates Republicans are most anxious about - Reps. Phil Gingrey (R-Ga.) and Paul Broun (R-Ga.) - leading the pack. Whoever emerges from the clown-car primary, with seven candidates and counting, will face a candidate Democrats are high on in a state where shifting demographics benefit their party.

"Gingrey has a history of making some gaffes, and Broun it seems like it's a gaffe every other day. Those are the two that worry Republicans the most as potential problems going into the general election," said Georgia Republican strategist Joel McElhannon, who's neutral in the race.

Georgia Republicans say they have the upper hand in the race to replace retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.) in a state where President Obama won 45 percent of the vote in 2012. But they voice concern over a number of potential scenarios in a primary that's anyone's for the taking.

Non-profit CEO Michelle Nunn (D), the daughter of former Sen. Sam Nunn (D-Ga.), has a clear Democratic field and is positioning herself as an economically centrist problem-solver. While she's an untested candidate Democrats are excited about her profile, and she ran slightly ahead of or even with every Republican in a recent poll conducted by the Democratic firm Public Policy Polling.

The scenario that panics Republicans is Broun winning the nomination. The Tea Party-affiliated congressman has generated controversy by calling evolution and the big bang theory "lies straight from the pit of hell" and routinely referring to President Obama as a socialist.

The actual panic is probably in the repubican establishment who may see another reliable go-along senator replaced by a solid conservative.

the MSM can no longer sustain their fairy tale about turning TX blue, so they have moved on with a drug induced delusion about GA.

The only thing that gives me pause is the dem is the well-financed daughter of Sam Nunn... wasn’t Nunn one of the “sainted ones?”

Nunn was a “conservative” democrat i.e. he was like Lieberman, good on national defense, mostly liberal on everthing else, though he was more conservative than Lieberman but less conservative than Zell Miller.

I doubt just the name Nunn is going to get her elected. A lot of those who the name Nunn meant anything to are dead.

But the democrats want the seat back. They had it from 1852 to 2003.

Perhaps Republicans are concerned that the race isn't going to be a cakewalk, as many other statewide races have been for the GOP.

Perhaps they're remembering the two 'sure things' from the 2012 elections - Indiana and Missouri? Regardless of which one wins the nomination people going to be crossing their fingers every time they open their mouth.

“Conservative” Democrat ? He was no Conservative. His last two years in office he got a 55% liberal score in 1996 and a 78% liberal score in 1995 (a liberal “reactionary” against the Conservative GOP Senate).

Haha. That’s why I put conservative in quotes, i.e. conservative from a liberal point of view, meaning to the right of Ted Kennedy at the time.

Most likely true. I moved to north Georgia from a deep deep blue state precisely so I could vote for a conservative who would win and do what was asked by the voters. The ATL is the liberal bastion of Georgia not the rest of the state

From the media perspective, a “Conservative Democrat” is someone who only supports the leftist agenda 99% of the time or less (Lieberman, although even he scored a perfect 100% leftist from the ACU on at least one occasion). Conversely, a “Moderate Republican” is a Republican who votes like a leftist Democrat (Chafee of RI, until he officially became one this year).

The only thing about Georgia is that Illegals (undocumented Democratic Voters) are moving in, but It will never be LIBERAL!!

My first choice is Jack Kingston. I'm met him numerous times and even been able to speak privately with him for over 20 minutes.

Any Republican candidate that DOESN'T court the TEA Party vote might get my vote in the general election but they won't have my support. Garde la Foi, mes amis! Nous nous sommes les sauveurs de la République! Maintenant et Toujours!

Kingston is pure establishment. 22 years in Congress, in office continuously since 1985. That’s the last thing we need in the Senate, a guy who has spent half his life in office.

I can’t stop laughing. Your chances of getting killed by a drone strike are better than a Dem winning that senate seat. We are going to elect Dr. Paul Broun who is a hair on fire conservative. I can’t wait to vote for him. All that bugaboo about his views on evolution are not going to stop him from getting elected. This is GA, fundamental Christian central.

Kingston and Gingrey are RINOs from what I’ve heard. I’m not backing Broun either. Waaay too much Akin potential.

Karen Handel has been given a thumbs up by a few Freepers I have discussed this with.

Right, that’s what I was thinking too.
