Mideast: The assault on a monastery and the murder of its priest by Syrian rebels is a stark reminder of the threat to Christians in the Middle East and that the enemy of our enemy is not necessarily our friend.
The Vatican has confirmed the murder by beheading of Syrian Catholic priest Francois Murad in the town of Gassanieh in northern Syria by jihadists belonging to the al-Qaida-linked group Jabhat al-Nusra, or Al-Nusra front.
This raises questions about our involvement in aiding Syrian groups opposed to the regime of Bashar Assad and whether our efforts will result in the same unfortunate results as our support of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt.
As we recently editorialized, two of the three major anti-Assad fronts — the Syrian Islamic Front and the Syrian Liberation Front — are Islamist, as are 10 of the 12 identified rebel groups.
The most powerful rebel force is Jabhat al-Nusra, with 7,000 fighters. It's a branch of al-Qaida in Iraq that has publicly pledged allegiance to al-Qaida chief Ayman al-Zawahiri.
As we also noted, the Obama administration's announcement that it would send more military aid to the rebel Supreme Military Council was another attempt to pick winners and losers, this time in a conflict we long ignored, over which we have no control and little influence, and in which other major players have quite different desired outcomes.
A video that has gone viral purports to show an execution reminiscent of the execution of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl by the Taliban in Afghanistan.

But Jimmy Carter says Catholics and and Muslims are the same. Didn’t the jihadists get the message that Catholicism is uber patriarchal and woman-hating too? And when is the last time a Catholic beheaded an imam? Evil animals.
