Politics Blog: Daily Kos founder... on the “young kids” at the changing Netroots Nation

Many of the liberal activists huddling at the Netroots Nation conference this weekend in San Jose howled when former President Bush created the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, where hundreds of people have been held without charges in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

So why aren’t more upset that President Obama hasn’t closed it — as he promised when he ran for president in 2008?

On Friday, Obama got pounded for his inaction, a contrast in the otherwise rah-rah atmoophere at this four-day confab that ends Sunday. They also ripped him for betraying the country’s values through his secretive military drone program.

And this blowback wasn’t just coming from peaceniks. One speaker at a panel Friday called “Your Rights at Risk: Drones, Indefinite Detention and Global War,” retired Air Force Col. Morris Davis, was the former chief military prosecutor at Guantanamo under Bush until he resigned over the use of water-boarding on prisoners.

Davis had high hopes for Obama when he campaigned on closing Guantanamo.

“I was a big believer in hope and change,” Davis said. “I was extraordinarily disappointed a few months later when he began to backpedal.”

Just as “people seem to have on their Bush Blinders,” Davis said, “on the other side people have their Obama goggles. If reality was half as compelling as his rhetoric, we wouldn’t be having this conversation today.”

Ouch.

I've never been a fan of it either. If they weren't killed on the battlefield they should have been held over there till we decide we're done.

You, "Sir," sound like nothing more than a politically opportunistic dunce.

Nutroots Nation ping! Always good for a DUFU, PJ—the photos to be found are priceless—but I probably won’t have time.

Will check it out tonight after my coupon run. Will there be a chocolate fountain there? That is the legacy of their first conference when Mark Warner provided them a chocolate fountain at the Vegas Stratosphere party. Since that time, chocolate fountains have become much more ubiquitous on our cultural landscape. They are a regular feature at the Golden Corral. In fact, whenever I dip a couple of strawberries into a chocolate fountain, I always think of how they got their start...at Mark Warner’s Stratosphere bribery party for the KOmmies.

“I was a big believer in hope and change,” Davis said.

And now you're a dope and deranged.
