As I said on Current TV a couple of nights ago, I have never seen a situation in which a Congress, terrified of a particular lobby, has behaved in such open contempt of American public opinion as its doing now on guns. Ninety percent of Americans approve of background checks, and upwards of 80 percent in many red states. But one man opposes them, and there we are. Wayne LaPierre may have won the week, and he may slither away without Congress doing anything this time around. But the laws of physics are such that he cant do this forever. Hes like Louis XVI in about 1788. He may be on top now, and his hard-line posture against any and all change may serve him well for the time being; but the revolution is coming, and once it arrives, well beat the NRA, and hell be a figure not of power but of ridicule, left to ponder the what-ifs.
I dont know whats going to happen with the current bill. It looks like Republican Senator Tom Coburn is no longer negotiating with Chuck Schumer and Joe Manchin. If thats the case, any reform is on hold for now.
But it doesnt mean this fight is over. This episode, even if it ends today, has already cost the NRA a lot. For starters, America now knows that a majority of the groups rank and file disagrees with the leadership and are not the crazy hard-liners that the groups leaders are. This is very useful knowledge indeed. It would have been like knowing, had it been true, that most white Birminghamians secretly opposed Bull Connor....

The NRA is more united then ever.
The country is self segregating to an extent. The libtards have been migrating to the centers of idiocy, SF, NY, etc. for years. Now gun makers going to Texas. CW II is on the horizon. THAT is physics.
It must have hurt to pull those made up numbers out of this asshat's behind, or maybe he just got it backwards as in Do NOT approve.
The only way CurrentTV would be useful to anyone was if they were frying liberals in ol’sparky for the amusement of all.
I’m pissed I have to wait for six years to vote against Joe Manchin.
When guns are outlawed I will then be an outlaw. . . . .
This statement alone from Japan after the war should be enough for ANYBODY. . . . . "We never considered invading the mainland due to the fact too many Americans had guns"
tag line correction
I don’t believe his poll numbers on Americans wanting background checks one stinking bit. He’s lying. He’s nothing but a name-dropping (ooooh...I was on Current TV) politico out there trying to help the Democrats push lies.
I guess next time he’s on “CURRENT TV”, he’ll have to be condemning Jews and praising Allah - for the good of the Democrats.
In his panty-wearing fascist wet dreams, perhaps.
How many of us could picture an Øbama being elected 30 years ago? 20? even 10? But, yet, not only was he elected once...he was elected a second time, even with the economy crumbling at his hands.
How many of us could picture "homosexual marriage" being made legal, even through the tyranny of the black-robed dictators, 20 years ago? Even 10 years ago, we could make the claim that the only way that they could get it was through judicial fiat. But now, there are what, four states have it in place (MD, WA, NY, and ME) either through legislative measures or through popular referenda.
The brainwashing of the popular media on the "low information" voter is nonstop and is having its effect over time. The left-wing (I refuse to call it liberal) indoctrination of our young in primary, secondary, and university education has been going on for generations and is gradually taking its toll, both on shaping the attitudes of our children and removing their ability to critically think for themselves in order to make up their own minds based on the evidence presented before them.
I know how many FReepers understand the actual purpose of the Second Amendment. But if you were to go out and ask that question of the average "man / woman / thing" on the street, how many of them would understand why it was put in there? I would wager very, very few of them. And if you tried to educate them on the second amendment's real purpose, you'd be labeled a tin-foil-hat freak.
I'm not as far gone as Limbaugh on the popular situation, but we don't get ahold of the culture soon, this dweeb Tomasky may well be proven right.
Leftists are extremely good at self deception. It is Orwellian (DoubleThink).
He believes the lies that he has been told. He has never even heard that the NRA’s internal polls show that its members oppose background checks by 89 percent.
On some level, he might wonder, if the public wants background checks by 90 percent, why President Obama’s approval ratings are lower than the NRA’s, but he may dismiss that number as rediculous.
I doubt it. This guy is just spouting the party line.
“Ninety percent of Americans approve of background checks....”
That is a lie from the pits of hell.
Hard to believe someone with a cogent, functioning brain wrote this crap. Libtard nutcase wacko... that explains it.
He’s stretching the truth quite a bit with that 80-90% support claim. Yes, I suspect that 80-90% of the country is going to say they support ‘background checks’ if you ask a generic poll question. I would answer ‘yes’ to that question, because I don’t want criminals, crazies and crackheads buying guns easily.
That doesn’t mean I support the idiocy that’s being pushed by the Democratic party, in fact, I think the current system is sufficient. There’s where he’s lying and using what is probably a legitimate stat to back his lie. Just because a person supports some form of ‘background check’ doesn’t mean they support Obama or his cronies in Congress on the issue.
You *might* get 50% support nationally for universal background checks and registration, but upon closer inspection, its going to be highly concentrated in the libtard districts. That’s the reason why it can’t pass in Congress.
Sort of like Soros. That's what they're familiar with.
This idiot doesn't understand that his numbers are backward and that it's not the NRA that's "terrifying" the Congress critters, but their actual constituents, who are putting the heat on them in local townhall meetings and in formal communications with their congressional staffs.
