Four cities in Rhode Island will be offering various gift cards for firearms turned in anonymously at four locations. The cities involved are: Providence, Warwick, Central Falls, and Bristol.
The turn ins will be conducted from 10am to 2pm on April 6th. Unlike some programs that put forfeiture funds to questionable use, this program will be conducted with privately donated funds.
Rhode Island is one of a handful of states that forbid the private sales of firearms. All firearm sales must be conducted through State agents, and there is a waiting period of seven days after the sale before a firearm can be transfered. This makes the conduct of private sales at these turn in events practically impossible.
Many turn in events have had healthy competition from private buyers, stretching turn in funds and placing valuable firearms in responsible hands.
A turn in event in Maine featured cooperation with a gun control group and Second Amendment supporters. Turned in firearms were sold to a dealer, with the proceeds used to fund the special Olympics.
Turn in events where valuable firearms are destroyed for political theater have been likened to Medieval deodand rituals, where objects were found guilty of crimes.

Comrade Chafee is going to turn his state into a desolation.
If I were a resident of Rhode Island I would sell my gun out of state at the nearest gunshop.I may not get top dollar for it but it would most likely be more than what the state would pay during their turn in’s.
Actually it’s a Gun “Laundering” program because murder weapons get turned in by Gang Bangers and there’s no questions asked.
They don’t check the seller’s ID?
The turn in event in RI is supposed to be anonymous.
Well then...if true, it isn't enforced. I purchased a Mossberg 30-30 rifle in RI and it was transferred the same day to my local FFL in MA.
In a state like Rhode Island that prohibits private sales, I think it would be great if 2nd Amendment supporters and gun enthusiatists set up tables outside offering to “Appraise Your Guns for Free” and have lists of FFL dealers where they could sell their used guns.
If people find out their guns are worth a lot more than the $50 to $200 offered at the Non-Mandatory Confiscations, they might well take the time to sell them for fair market value.
What a wonderful idea!
Probably because you transferred it to an FFL. Dealers would usually be exempt from the seven day wait.
thanks
Reason #387 why I left that state for the Bluegrass!
Set up a table and a sign just over the RI State line on Saturdays and advertise in Craigslist, Index cards at supermarkets, signs at gun stores etc. You’ll get the business.
