Will this finally be enough to break the Obama administration's hold over Senate Democrats when it comes to the Hagel nomination? Chuck Hagel has refused to disclose to the Senate Armed Services Committee the sources of his foreign funding over the last five years. Is Chuck roast? (Hat Tip: Noah P).
Republican members of the committee asked Hagel last week for information on whether any of the organizations received funding from any foreign government, individual, or corporation a request he declined late Tuesday in a letter citing confidentiality agreements.
"[T]he information you seek is legally controlled by the individual entities and not mine to disclose," he said, adding that he was not involved in the day-to-day operation of the organizations. "As a board-member, I have a fiduciary duty that includes the obligation to maintain the confidentiality of non-public corporate information. The information may also be subject to various other legal requirements or contractual arrangements that prohibit its disclosure."
According to a senior GOP aide close to the confirmation process, "Senators are not reacting well to this response."
"Hagel is refusing to answer any of the questions or make any effort to get them the answers," the aide said. "He is basically telling Senators they have no right to know if he has been unduly influenced by foreign governments or foreign agents over the last five years. What is he hiding? I'm told several Senators, including McCain, who have previously expressed opposition to a filibuster said privately yesterday that failure to disclose foreign funding information would change their thinking."

RCP has Hagel confirmed easily. Has anyone else noticed RCP’s drift to the left?
FTA:
“Hagel is refusing to answer any of the questions or make any effort to get them the answers,” the aide said. “He is basically telling Senators they have no right to know if he has been unduly influenced by foreign governments or foreign agents over the last five years. What is he hiding? I’m told several Senators, including McCain, who have previously expressed opposition to a filibuster said privately yesterday that failure to disclose foreign funding information would change their thinking.”
DUH!! What’s the big deal? That’s exactly what the Illegal’s done for his whole life and no pubbie, expecially McCain, has said a word about it.
Heck, he's so dimwitted he might not know where the money comes from.
It’s a legitimate issue...what’s he got to hide?
Is Helen Reddy?
A silly question. Hagel could ax-murder a young girl (in the most heinous way possible) on live TV viewed by millions and the Dems would still confirm him by a 100% vote.
You know? Lately, whenever I think of our Senators, that country clubbing bunch of SOBs with their fingers everywhere they don’t belong, deciding the fates of millions with the persective of a God on Mt Olympus, I think of the fabled 100 Senators of Rome. They are oblivious. They judge even their own constituents plaints with the “he doesn’t UNDERSTAND the complexities, blah blah blah.”
I have absolutely NO respect for ANY of them, not even my own two Senators from Georgia. The only thing I can say is that I read a book by Tom Clancy once whose ending kind of encouraged me a bit.
Old Chuck just pulled the plug on himself. The position that he seeks requires that the candidiates loyality and character be above question. We don’t need another bumbler in our Government.
Has anyone indicated an amount for Hagel’s “foreign funding” over the past five years?
It wouldn’t effect anyone else’s privacy or interests for Hagel to release total numbers for foreign funding, and what percentage that is of total funding (on a year-by-year basis would be best). If we are talking peanuts, this would be a non-issue. Dodging release of anything at all makes you suspect it is not peanuts, and thus speaks to the independence of the nominee.
Between this and the sexual harrassment claims (by his staffers) seems to me non-political grounds for him to be told to step side by Obama.
