Handicapped-accessible housing, licenses for undocumented immigrants, top issues for Latina leaders in Nashua..
Though they come from different countries, the 14 women in the Granite State Organizing Projects Latina leadership series share similar fears.
We always have this thing in the back of our heads that no matter what we do, were never going to be heard, because were pretty much not from here, said Liz Taveras, of Nashua. Its like, Youre an alien coming to this country. Go back to your own country. But I was raised here. If anyone asks me about Puerto Rico, I have nothing to say.
Thats because many of the women who participated in the eight-week program, meant to empower women with Latin heritage to speak up for themselves and their community, have lived 10 or more years in Nashua if not their whole lives.
If you asked me about Nashua, then its different, Taveras said. I grew up here. This is where I have my kids. Its really hard to have that in the back of your head, but in your heart, this is your country. This is your place.
After two months of research, presentations, neighborhood interviews and visits with agencies, plus several confidence-building activities, thats all about to change. The women, who were prodded and prepped to speak up for their Nashua neighborhoods, have found the voices to do so.

Illegal aliens ...
I don't belong to an English-American Club.
I don't campaign for rights for Englishmen.
I don't campaign for benefits for those who have English-sounding names.
I'm an American. I want no special treatment for myself or anyone who shares my ethnic background. That stuff doesn't matter.
A Latina? You want to self-identify as a Latina? I have no use for you. Try to be an American.
Pretty much.
foreigners making political demands....
that’s a felony in Mexico I bet
“empower” them to demand oher people pay for their crap
I agree with you entirely. Stupid bitches don’t seem to understand that Latin is a language.
A friend of mine working this past holiday season was doing a credit application and the “state ID” of a “resident” didn’t match with her social. Just a relevant fact.
Quick. Someone check her rear view mirror for a PR flag...
