Leslie Marshall’s husband is an orthopedic surgeon in California.

Her husband was born in New York. His parents are from India. “He’s not political at all,” said Leslie. “I mean the joke is, ‘Honey, who am I voting for so I don’t sleep on the couch.’

“My husband was raised Muslim and his parents are Muslim. Both he and his parents are physicians, and I find it odd that no one asks, when my husband is saving their lives as he does weekly (he is an orthopedic sports and trauma surgeon), what his religion is; they just want him to help them remain alive. No one asked my mother-in-law who, who delivered over 3,000 American babies—who brought forth life—her religion when she was helping them bring their baby into the world. Perhaps the Muslims doctors should start asking the patients what their religion is.”

I used to be a Christian. But it is the hate that groups such as the Florida Family Association, and the hypocrisy of those and other Christian groups have illustrated time and time again that kept me away. Much like Gandhi, I could not find Christ among them.

Why should such simplistic work pay enough to live on?

Why is a “living wage” the employer’s problem?

If flattening dough and sprinkling ingredients isn’t worth enough to live on, then it isn’t enough to live on - either learn to live on less or work harder/smarter/more to produce more. The activity in question really isn’t worth that much, so why demand it pay that much? Just showing up and doing what anyone can do with minimum effort is worth minimum wage - it’s not worth the cost of three meals a day and housing and other expenses.

What’s wrong with taking another job? I often work two jobs, and earn a lot more than that. I want to live better, so I work harder & longer & smarter - I don’t whine that luxury should me mine just because I exist.

BTW: the point of my tagline is precisely that one _can_ live on that little. Half the world’s population lives on less than $2/day; if you’re earning 28x that much, you’re not poor.

I guess at the end of the day, we had it hard, sure enough, but we never expected our employers to be the “be all-end all” of our existence.

We were glad for the opportunity to work and for the opportunity to learn and to work our way up or to get a better job later. Insurance was a perk, not an expectation. And we didn't go to the Dr for a hangnail or sue for worker's comp for a smashed finger.

The entire attitude is different, we were just grateful for opportunity.

“Low wage workers negotiate nothing. They have to take what the employer offers with no real opportunity to bargain.”

Then it’s up to them to improve what they have to offer to something better. There is no opportunity to bargain for some jobs because there are a lot of other people willing to take the job. Supply and demand: those who earn more have more to offer; if you want more, it’s up to you to offer more.

THIS is why some earn a lot more than others: whatever the situation, they take whatever opportunities they can to edge out the competition - and there are a LOT of opportunities out there.

Want higher pay? Are you spending every spare minute improving your skills, or watching TV?

There is no opportunity to bargain for some jobs because there are a lot of other people willing to take the job.

Only because there are a lot of people that are in a position to have to take that crappy job for low pay through outside circumstances, i.e. medical bills, student bills, etc. If some of that pressure was relieved more people would have the opportunity to better themselves or hold out for better wages.

Supply and demand: those who earn more have more to offer; if you want more, it’s up to you to offer more.

That's not necessarily true. Many times it's connections, not abilities, that allow you to earn the really high wages.

So I take it that by saying:

“Since I think single-payer is the most equitable kind of healthcare environment than I’d have to say yeah.”

do you feel that Health Care is a “Right”?

Yes, I do think access to healthcare is a right. I believe healthcare, since it deals directly with life, death, and the quality of life for everyone, is not an appropriate place for the profit motive to reign supreme. And please don’t respond with hospitals not being able to turn away people in the emergency room because we both know that it still happens and that ERs are not the most efficient ways of providing healthcare.

And if we are sticking with the model where you need to get your health insurance through an employer than it makes sense to me that the revenue for running the program is collected at the employer level.
