Report: 83 percent of doctors have considered quitting over Obamacare
Daily Caller ^ | 7/9/12 | Sally Neilson

Posted on 07/09/2012 11:54:34 AM PDT by Nachum

Eighty-three percent of American physicians have considered leaving their practices over President Barack Obama’s health care reform law, according to a survey released by the Doctor Patient Medical Association.

The DPMA, a non-partisan association of doctors and patients, surveyed a random selection of 699 doctors nationwide. The survey found that the majority have thought about bailing out of their careers over the legislation, which was upheld last month by the Supreme Court.

Even if doctors do not quit their jobs over the ruling, America will face a shortage of at least 90,000 doctors by 2020. The newly passed health care bill increases the demand for physicians by expanding insurance coverage. This change will exacerbate the current shortage as more Americans live past 65.

By 2025 the shortage will balloon to over 130,000, Len Marquez, the director of government relations at the American Association of Medical Colleges, told The Daily Caller.

“One of our primary concerns is that you’ve got an aging physician workforce and you have these new beneficiaries — these newly insured people — coming through the system,” he said. “There will be strains and there will be physician shortages.”

The DPMA found that many in the medical profession do not believe the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will lead to better access to medical care for the majority of Americans, co-founder of the DPMA Kathryn Serkes told TheDC.

“Doctors clearly understand what Washington does not — that a piece of paper that says you are ‘covered’ by insurance or ‘enrolled’ in Medicare or Medicaid does not translate to actual medical care when doctors can’t afford to see patients at the lowball payments, and patients have to jump through government and insurance company bureaucratic hoops,” she said.

All part of the Cloward-Piven plan.

This just creates an opportunity for all new doctors to be Eric Holder's people.

I’d say almost every doctor over the age of 55 will quit.

I'm skeptical about this. I would guess that they thought about it for about 20 seconds until they asked themselves 'what else can I do where I can earn a quarter of million (or more) a year?' Some close to retirement might leave early but I doubt there would be any major exodus.

There are plenty of reasons to oppose Obamacare (and its beta version, Romneycare) but this isn't one of them, IMO.

Nothing would make Obama, et al happier!

I was informed by the wife of a fellow who is gearing up to become a Physician's Assistant that in Canada, PAs are even performing surgery.

This guy, when he finishes in 9 months, will look to "practice" in CA as they also have a very liberal approach to having PAs pretty much handle lots of roles formerly taken by actual doctors.

Medical School acceptance and graduation standards will be lowered.

Physician-only care requirements will be altered. (LPNs will be certified for outpatient surgeries without an MD present, chiropractors will be allowed to reset broken bones)

The other 17% have already left?

More than 40% of US physicians are over the age of 55. So these 30 million new Obamacare patients are going to be cared for by ... well, by who, exactly????

It's "cool" to promise everyone a chicken in every pot, a car in every garage, and free medical care for every boo-boo. Except there aren't enough chickens, pots, cars, garages and doctors to make that happen. Never mind that there isn't enough money.

My family doctor is thinking of just going to a fee based practice. You go to him you just pay him. No insurance . We told him fine by us.

“So these 30 million new Obamacare patients are going to be cared for by ... well, by who, exactly????”

Don’t worry. With the shortage of doctors, Obama will propose a guest worker program for Cuban and Paki doctors.

The goal is to fundamentally transform medicine. And besides, most of the current doctors are rich white males, so in Obama’s world they are part of the problem. If they don’t leave voluntarily they’ll be pushed out.

I've a good friend who is a Physician...I have e-mailed him to see what he thinks about this survey.

My future son in law...just started his rotations, just took the boards, and is on track to achieve his long dream....to become a Doctor.

I dunno what the future holds...for him, my daughter or me...for that matter. My daughter is a brand new PTA...I have been a RRT for over 20 years. I don't care much about me....but I worry about my kids and their families.

One of my longtime Docs called to let me know he was closing his practice, and going to work at a research facility. He told me that without all the overhead required for his office, he’d be “taking home” virtually the same amount of money, without all the responsibilities and worries. He’s also on the managing director’s board of a local hospital, and he’s really glad to be getting out of that. He says the politics are too dumb and infuriating, that he refuses to put up with it anymore!

Exactly how many positions like that are available? I’m sure that anywhere close to enough to provide employment for an exodus of doctors.

“Medical School acceptance and graduation standards will be lowered.”

That’s been going on for years. You have, of course, heard of “affirmative action”?

I’ve been a physician assistant since 1975. I’ve taken the national board exam 6 times. The first time it was a very difficult exam to pass. Subsequent exams have gotten easier every 6 years - and it isn’t because I’m getting any smarter!

They are doing what my doc is doing: going private.

They ask for a $1500 to $2000 annual retainer, limit patient load to 500-600. You pay cash, then file for reimbursement from your insurance carrier.

Fewer staff, fewer regs, no government.

Easily clear half a mill.
