First Time Someone in U.S. Officialdom Puts Brakes on WWII-Unrepentant Croatia’s EU Entry

It turns out that someone at the State Department knew all along that Croatia never answered for its Nazi past and shouldn’t just sail into the EU un-scrutinized and unreformed. Unfortunately, it’s a bit late. This former Under Secretary of State, Stuart Eizenstat, could have spoken up when Croatia was put on the fast-track in the mid-2000s, or even as late as last year, when the final stage of accession began; Croatia will be an EU member by mid next year.

Still, one is grateful for the following item from Thursday’s Haaretz (and please don’t be fooled by the paper’s — likely not Eizenstat’s — clumsy efforts at moral equivalence where there is none, via the strained insertion of Serbia):

Much ado about nothing.

Who really thinks there will be an EU still this time next year?

Apologies for sins committed by ones ancestors are both academic and disingenuously vapid—WWII is approaching ancient history now and except for hunting down the few “hands on” war criminals still alive the time to move on has long passed.

I had a great great etc grandfather in 18th Century Virginia who owned slaves—upon his death his last will and testament required his heir to not sell them except under extreme impoverished circumstances and even then to not sell them where they would be separated from their immediate families.

A man of his times warts and all I have no reason not to honor my slave owning ancestor. Now the African slavers and Yankee slave ship captains who figured in their balance books how many humans packed like sardines in their holds can die miserably and still show a profit with the survivors at the auction block upon arrival—THEY should apologize but then who will do it for them now?

These small states in Middle Europe were caught between Stalin and Hitler. They were often conquered first by one, and then by the other, and sometimes back again.

So, this jerk thinks that for a small country to side with Stalin was OK, but that for a small country to work with Hitler was not? Mass murders were performed by both sides. In fact, Stalin managed to murder far more people than Hitler before he left the scene.

None of it was pretty. And Hitler died more than 60 years ago. Most of those who cooperated with him have been long dead.

Getting Croatia into the EU was a cinch. Just flash some cash for “civil works” projects (500-600 million) and buy off the Croatian leaders with high paying, cushy EU jobs.

On top of that, low interest loans for whatever the Croatian leadership wants. Spend, spend, spend!!!! And Germany, France and Briton covers the bills.....A PERFECT SCAM!!!

They now form a large voting block of poor/indebted eastern European countries whose votes back the EU leadership lock-stock-and-barrel. They’re simply exchanging one set of apparatchiks for another.
