Romney, Paul merge delegates to Defeat Santorum in MO Caucuses

March 18, 2012. St. Louis. It’s midnight Missouri time and there is still no sign of any winner in the Missouri Caucus. In fact, there are no vote totals, news reports or even a Missouri Republican Party Caucus website. It was there earlier. Now, it simply says, the page doesn’t exit. News accounts from earlier in the day before the media black-out detailed near riots from one caucus site to the other as Ron Paul supporters battled the state GOP leadership.

Some of the highlights of news accounts coming in from Missouri include the arrests of two Ron Paul caucus goers, one caucus site being shut down before a vote could be taken, and even the presence of a police helicopter dispatched to the chaotic scene at another caucus site. With all those reports of confrontation, it’s amazing there are no reports of vote results. The Google and Yahoo election sites are suddenly missing and CNN and Fox News both refused to mention today’s caucus even once.

Where were the Gingrich caucus goers? We got our first glimpse of what will happen at the convention with Romney/Paul teaming up.

I will agree with Gingrich on the point that the nominating process has turned into a joke.

Where were the Gingrich caucus goers?

Same place where Newt was on the February ballot.

Nowhere.

Well, there goes the Paultard denial that Paul and Romney were in cahoots.

Well, then there’s this story from the NY Daily News. I guess no one really knows or what?

http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/santorum-missouri-caucus-days-controversy-article-1.1041482?localLinksEnabled=false

Santorum did supposedly win St Louis County. All the other reports are from large countys (without big turnout), but if Santorum won the many small rural counties, perhaps he’s still okay.

Still, the whole process needs a facelift.

I can tell you there was a man by the name of Kelly who is a strong Newt supporter at the courthouse in Barry Co. All were disenfranchasied because of the inane way this entire election was run and it is a combo of the national gop, state and even our dem gov Nixon had his imput in this crazy process.

I didnt go to the caucus here...I do NOT like Cole! have attended several meetings and the voters are silenced..we have steak dinners at Shell Knob and listen to someone play the f'ing duclimer and cant say ONE word regarding politics; or go to barbeques and only certain people speak and control it...it is disgusting imo. There are a bunch of angry folks out here. I should have gone...and my excuse is weak..I was in an auto accident, lost my neighbor in the tornado and my son in laws dad was buried on Sunday..but I should have sucked it up and raised holy hell..

They didnt go for the candidates but for the delegates. Mass confusion and I blame David Cole. He is state chair but lives in my county.

Confusion On Caucus Night

The first caucus was a messy process. More than 250 people showed up, most planning to vote directly for the candidates. But that was not to be.

David Cole, the chairman of the Missouri Republican Party, told caucusgoers that they would be voting on delegates to attend district and state conventions. Those meetings are weeks from now, where Missouri’s actual voting delegates will be decided. The delegates picked in this caucus won’t be bound to any particular candidate, and they have to be elected in slates.

The county GOP happened to have a slate prepared, as did the Tea Party. But most folks were blindsided by the rules. Cole apologized to the angry crowd that they weren’t aware of the process.

The confusion is understandable. The rules for these caucuses are different from county to county. Here in Barry County, only party activists had seen them beforehand. Frank Hubert, a robust 80-year-old in a blue blazer and tie, was one of many to stand up and vent.

“What we have had happen tonight is totally unacceptable, and it is a de facto railroad job,” he said. ‘Bizarre’ Process Sparks Frustration

As tempers flared, it was clear the room was sharply divided between Tea Party supporters and traditional Republicans. Some likened it the caucus to the US Congress. Ralph Kelley, a retired engineer, backing Newt Gingrich, stepped out for a smoke.

"I will agree with Gingrich on the point that the nominating process has turned into a joke. "

Not really, political support and arm-twisting was normal in Primaries before WWI and ELECTIONS. The bulk of the delegates were chosen at thousands of small gatherings of party faithful around the country...country and state conventions. Caucus. Sometimes just a vote of the county or precinct board.

I'd appreciate it if you could share the quote from Gingrich if you have it handy.

This would be something I disagree with him on.

I’ll have to go back and check. I believe it was some article here tagged to Newt posted on Wednesday or Thursday from a stop in IL after the AL/MS primaries.

Paraphrasing, but I believe the contention of his was too many states with too many different rules favoring the establishlishment, along with the contention that liberal states, and more significantly, the liberal areas of the liberal states get more than an equal chance of choosing the nominee based on delegate allocation.

I remember reading it and agreeing. If Romney didn’t have the Mormon background that’s been allowing him to win some rural Western states, just about every county he’s won is a county he doesn’t have a prayer of carrying in the General Election. The assumption by the GOP-e is that conservative dissent will fall in-line.

A vote for Ron Paul is a vote for Mitt Romney.
