Rick Perry’s Second Time At Bat
Red State ^ | December 4, 2011 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 12/04/2011 7:10:13 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Last night on Fox News’ candidate forum, Governor MItt Romney defaulted to quoting David Brooks from the New York Times. There’s why Herman Cain’s supporters will be looking at Gingrich and Perry.

In fact, last night a number of Cain’s Iowa staff moved to Rick Perry.

Rick Perry will get another look. He will get another look because while the grassroots and Republican voters in general are moving to Gingrich, conservative leaders around the country are rapidly running up their watch towers to light fires against Gingrich. They remember him from the 90′s and they don’t trust him.

Rick Perry is going to get a second look. Jon Huntsman made the fatal mistake of branding himself too moderate. He’ll get a look if people don’t like what they see in Rick Perry.

This now raises a huge red flag: is Rick Perry ready for his second chance?

I’m not sure Perry is ready. His debate performances have steadily improved. But there is a real problem for Perry. He needs to run a really flawless race and his campaign needs to send out some strong signals that they get it and will perform.

Rightly or, I hope, wrongly, I get the impression they still think it is their race. I think they still think they are biding their time. I think they still think they are fighting Kay Bailey Hutchison. I think if they don’t wake up soon and shake up, they are toast.

Rick Perry is going to get a second look. He is the most consistent conservative in the race. In fact, this should be his race to lose given his positioning.

“The MSM has been brutal to Perry — they’ve made him out to be a mean, racist moron. It’s been so over the top, I’m surprised you’ve missed it.”

Oh, I didn't miss anything; I'm simply saying that this will be considered child's play compared to what's in store for him. Make no mistake, the Leftist’s are high-fiving each other, and laughing at the GOP at Cain's withdrawal.

“Well, now the rubber is going to hit the road again and conservatives are going to reassess Gov. Perry, look at his record, see what the Left has tried to hide and learn the facts.”

Actually, here's what's going to happen: the media will run any type of dirt (allegations) in Perry's past. Remember, it won't matter if it's credible or not; it will be the “seriousness of the charge” and how he handles it that will matter. The Left have already proven that this tactic was successful with Cain...why would they change strategies now? I'll wager they'll go after Perry even harder than Cain.

You see, “his [Perry's] record” really won't matter when the assault begins. That's the purpose. These Leftwing hit-pieces keep the candidates off message, and cast doubts in the voters minds. After the assault begins, people won't be asking; “What are his positions on the issues?” No, instead, just like with Cain, the questions and concerns will be: “He's not handling these allegations well.”

You see, when the media were able to convince “conservatives” to go along with their trashing of Cain; they set the template for what would be the fate of all other surging GOP candidates. Cain also helped ensure our defeat by willingly dropping out of the race. He solidified to the Left that they are indeed still able to destroy our candidates.

Truth no longer matters; only allegations and how one handles them is all that counts. Trust me when I tell you; the Left will utterly destroy Perry. We've allowed the Left to do this to us.

Remember, Cain wasn’t afforded the benefit if these allegations were true or not; nope, it was “how he handled the allegations” that really mattered...right?

I don't remember that at all. I'm a Perry supporter but when the women first came out I was one of the first saying to wait until all the facts came out. After the second, third, and forth accuser came forward I kept my mouth shut because I STILL thought there needed to be proof. And I was furious at Cain at the time for blaming Perry! An unjustified accusation, but still kept my mouth shut.

No one had a problem with Perry’s regional accent when he burst onto the scene at the very top of the top tier, did they? It wasn’t until he had to articulate his positions in debate that he floundered. Don’t go getting all defensive and regionalist. We’re (almost) all Americans here. Perry’s West Texas accent has little to do with his current predicament.

Perry has a terrific record in TX, from what I can tell, but he has to be able to articulate it clearly in any damned accent if he wants to be POTUS. It’s really that simple.

The truth does matter. Your defeatist postings on this thread will not keep Perry from fighting on as he already has. He has weathered the non-stop attacks and stayed out there meeting the people -- who like him and his proposals.

A long list of accomplishments and/or claims. Yet, conspicuously absent any stance on illegal immigration. You could add the obligatory “wants to close the border” but then again, I guess the in-state tuition thing is out of the bag already, huh....

NO SALE!

Thankks for your post. It's good to know what the Romney camp is thinking! You guys are the ones who should give up. Romney will NEVER be President! He can't carry the South and no Republican can win without the South.

If you guys cared a whit for this country you'd tell your Ken doll candidate to drop out.

Unquestionably Bachmann is a more consistent conservative than Perry.

Perry’s fine with an authoritarian approach to “save lives” if his backers want a Gardasil mandate. He’s a TTC globalist if that’s what his backers want as well. And don’t get me started on illegal immigration.

Bachmann has weaknesses of her own, but conservative inconsistency and big-time cronyism are not two of them.

I do hope Erick Erickson is right. Rick Perry does have the best conservative governing record in the race. But the self inflicted errors and mistakes Perry has saddled his candidacy with appear to be insurmountable at this time. Right now GOP primary voters don't seem to be willing to give him a second chance at this time. At least, if you believe the polls.

OTOH. Not one primary vote has been cast and with 65%-70% of GOP voters still uncertain who they'll vote for, Perry still has a shot.... a long shot.

..unfortunately (for America), the dice been cast, the 0B0Z0's Quisling Press Corpse (& RINOS);...
has done their appointed task, clearing the way for 0B0Z0's choice (Romney - 0B0Z0 lite)
so now they can play the (racist card & rich mans' envy) DNC playbook...w/o any (media) hindrance, @ all.

but I don’t think he can beat Newt. Whatever you think of him, Newt is a known quantity and cannot be redefined.

True but once Newt's defined he'll be toast. My wife was asking the other day what all the baggage was that everyone claims Newt's got. I gave her a sanitized version and she had a very negative reaction. She'll never vote for him. She's not a news and politics junkie like I am and was only vaguely aware of Newt's marriage peccadillos. Reminded of the facts she was repelled. That will happen in spades once the media starts talking in detail about Newt's past.

Not to mention his lobbying activities.

Rick Perry's been in the spotlight for ten years as Governor, and prior to that as Lt. Gov and Attorney General. He's pretty much an open book. We won't get the kind of surprises that Cain has given us or th erepellant history that Newt has.

Romney supporter...me?

You do know that you can search all FReeper’s postings...right? Care to tell me where I've pimped Romney?

I was a diehard Palin supporter, but when she dropped out became a huge Cain fan. I was beyond disappointed at his dropping out.

Please read before you make dumb statements.

If your choice of candidate is based on how they pronounce words, it’s your loss

Amen! Of all the shallow, supercillious, simple minded reason to attack a candidate that one takes the cake!

I lived in TX 26 years and have no problem with Perry’s accent. My concern is that he can’t string two coherent sentences together without sounding like English is his second language. I know he’s not, but to the uninitiated it just makes him look stupid.

Could Perry stage a comeback? (Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour seems to think so)………Perry seems to have figured all of this out; his latest ad is aimed squarely at religious conservatives. If Perry climbs back into third place (or at least ties it with Ron Paul) in Iowa, he has a shot at maintaining a viable campaign. There is the traditional spin about there being three tickets out of Iowa and Perry — like Romney and Gingrich — is blessed by his rivals. Conservative voters are looking for a viable NotRomney, and while they are currently flocking to Gingrich, all the polling suggests his support (like those for his rivals) remains soft.”

Yea Romney supporter. I’ve read your posts and while you’re not open about it, you claim that you’ll support our candidate. Romney pimps aren’t welcome here so you keep it low. You attack every candidate but Romney. You can deny it all you care too but I see you for what you are.
