Thank God: Susan Boyle Escaped Abortion

Most are familiar with her story. In April of 2009, Susan Boyle’s audition for Britain’s Got Talent went viral. Nor is the modest Scottish singer from a wee village a one-hit wonder with two bestselling albums behind her now.

The media, however, still hasn’t warmed to Boyle’s 2010 autobiography. One clue (page 13):

When my mother arrived there in labour, the hillside was bright with golden daffodils and the sight of spring lifted her spirits for a moment. She was apprehensive. Having given birth to eight children over a period of twenty-three years, she had been advised not to have any more because of physical complications, but when she was forty-five along came yours truly. The doctors considered the danger so severe that they offered a termination, but, as a devout Catholic, that would have been unthinkable for my mother. She wanted to give this new life a chance.

It raises a politically-incorrect philosophical question: Why is the life of the mother considered superior to her unborn child’s? Another: Why are women who reject their doctors’ advice treated like crazy types when they choose life?

To add insult to serious ethical injury, these we’re-never-wrong doctors continued (page 14):

It was a few weeks before my parents were allowed to take me home. The doctors had explained that it was likely that I had suffered slight brain damage caused by perinatal asphyxia.

‘It’s probably best to accept that Susan will never be anything, so don’t expect too much of her.’

Or to summarize: The abortion-friendly doctors were wrong at every stage, just like our pro-censorship “pro-choice” media.

Poetically, Boyle also writes about “arriving back from Bangour Hospital in my Moses basket” (page 17). After all, she could have been just another forgotten garbage disposal case.

Years ago I remember reading an article, and I wish I could find it now, but it listed various pregnancy scenarios and asked, “Would you recommend abortion in this case?” The scenarios were all tales of poverty, abuse, illegitimacy, medical complications, and hopelessness. In each case, if you chose abortion, it turned out you would be aborting some famous person who contributed a lot to the world. For instance, one was, “A 15-year-old girl is pregnant, her boyfriend is not the father, and he’s upset.” If you recommend abortion in that case, it tells you that you just aborted Jesus Christ.

I remember a similar pair of stories - one seemingly ideal situation for having a child; one equally unpleasant for having a child. The child born into an ideal situation was Al Capone; the other child Albert Einstein.

‘We believe that all men are created equal and that they are Endowed By The CREATOR with ... LIFE!’ Indeed, thank you Lord for Sauan Boyle and her wonderful talent and strong witness.

Sounds like a clever article. The American Prolife movement is the Abolition movement of our time.

Indeed. “Endowed by their Creator” is key.
