[Hoax Received in OP's E-MAIL] Huge Earthquake Rocks Alaska

7.9 on the Richter scale; village destroyed.

An Earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale rocked the Aleutian Islands off of Alaska at 11:28 on Thursday morning according to the World Geologial Association. The earthquake was centered just off of the Rat Islands, a part of the Aleutian Archipeligo chain that extends into the Pacific Ocean off of the southern part of Alaska toward Asia.

The one village on the Island of Kiska, a mining settlement called Khvostov, was decimated; 219 of the approximately 750 residents were injured, although there were no fatalities reported.

The village of Khostov was built in World War II, as the entire Rat Island chain was a military base that provided access to Asia. The village was built with earthquakes in mind, and as such the structures are all built with safety measures to protect against the frequent quakes in the Aleutian chain.

Aftershocks were felt for nearly half an hour after the earthquake, which lasted nearly 90 seconds.

Coastal areas from mainland Alaska to California and across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii and Japan are currently on alert for wave activit from the Alaskan Earthquake.

This might be one of the "Multi-quake/Infrastructure Destroyed" hits, since it's in English-speaking geography and is around the 8.0 marker. I guess let's see what "shakes loose" in the next few hours.

I'm still shaking over the "(stripe)" hit.

Smiling takes 6.
Pulling this trigger takes 2.
I'm lazy.

Maybe it hasn’t actually happened yet?

Hah! You're right - its across the International Date Line, so it doesn't happen until tomorrow...

I’m not sure what the point would be, but I think this is a hoax.

No mention whatsoever on any of the Alaska TV new sites that I looked up.

I think that someone’s blowing smoke here.

Prayers for all. I bet Obama will shut down all oil operations in Alaska while we study the effect on drilling for oil and earthquakes.

There doesn’t seem to be much in the way of news regarding this.

Though I am 35 miles north of Anchorage, with even a quake this strong we usually don’t feel it from that far out.

The Aleutians get quakes all the time, but still this is a big one if it is indeed a 7.9.

If this were to hit a population center it would be a city killer.

WOW 7.9 - guess O will be headed up there instead of Hawaii.

Hawaii might be in for an event themselves.

A big wet one.

Good map here. I'll try to post an image below. Kiska is island #7, Shemya is #5.

FWIW, Kiska was one of two Aleutian Islands occupied by Japanese troops as a diversion during the Battle of Midway in June 1942. The Americans didn't take the bait. They returned in May 1943 to recapture Attu (#1) in a bloody battle. The Japanese abandoned Kiska about a month after that battle concluded. We ended up losing a handful of men from friendly fire when we invaded it again, not knowing the Japanese had left.
