Obamacare Will Create Doctor Shortages
The Cypress Times ^ | 5/9/10 | Kevin Price

Surveys among medical doctors during the health care debate showed that one out of three physicians intended to leave the profession of Obamacare became law. With the law on the books, many in the medical profession are not going to wait for states to sue or courts to over turn, but are going to simply find something else to do.

We need about 40 to 50 more threads on this subject.

I’ve always wondered where doctors go when they quit. I doubt that they become windmill mechanics, or asbestos removers. Perhaps they go to work in their area - maybe research (whoops, not many openings there), education (whoops, less doctors to be trained), drug companies (forget it).

I suspect that they will do what the UAW and other unions have done to destroy manufacturing - and that is “work to the rule” and not beyond it. Then they will retire as early as possible. The better ones, who want some freedom, will simply leave the country - for Mexico, Costa Rica, or Asia - and treat Americans there - and probably do very well. In any case, we are entering a new world.

I’ve already told my kids to not think about becoming a doctor - since that career will soon be miserable and probably not pay well (especially compared to the effort that needs to be made to get there). A lawyer, maybe (since they seem to be held in higher regard by our government)...but more likely engineers or something practical, with the possibly of getting some distance from government domination.

Well, like Britain, we will have to import them from other parts of the world. So, don’t worry.

(like those Dr.’s from the middle east who tried to bomb that Glasgow hospital a year or so ago)

What I predict is that fewer foreign born doctors will come to the US. They will start their practices in countries that provide better opportunities. This is where the shortage will come from.

Even those who don't quit will start seeing medicine as a 9-to-5 civil service job with a long lunch and Wednesdays off. What happens if every doctor who now works a 60 hour week cuts back to 40?

Sick at 7pm? Well, that's what 911 is for.

Why don't you start your own thread with that idea? I bet you can get 4 or 5 people to have a dialog with you.

Not only medical shortages. Socialism creates shortages of ‘everything’ We will soon be standing in line at government controlled malls and grocery stores awaiting the next promised ‘shipment’ of goods. While we wait we can read int the paper about the new government 5 year plan to fix all these problems caused by not enough socialism and ‘Hoarders’ and ‘Price Gougers.

When Britain socialized their medical care their doctors flooded the rest of the anglosphere, to be replaced by halfbaked immigrants from places like Pakistan. I expect the same will happen here.

That, and large components of healthcare will devolve to nurse practitioners and other subdoctoral providers.

I really don’t know how to start my own thread!

It does make you think, if a few doc’s are willing to make a bomb....the Hippocratic oath must not be a universal mantra for all the doc’s of the world: “First, do no harm.”

And...we corrupt the health care of 250 million people just to make sure 30 million without it have coverage some of whom prefer to buy Jimmy Choo shoes rather than have health insurance.

This is already happening to some degree. Whenever I make a dr appointment, they try to pass me off on a nurse practitioner, physician's assistant, or the like. I have to make a point to tell them I want to see a doctor! No offense to nurses or PAs, but I had a very bad experience with one (major misdiagnosis). I could have died. Welcome to Obamacare.

Sadly, your experience is not that unusual. Sure, doctors make mistakes, too. But at least you have someone who actually graduated medical school/residency and licensure requirements that are considerable more stringent than that required to be a NP or PA. Imagine getting on a plane and finding out the pilot didn’t complete full pilot training and certification!

I think they will retire early if they can.Others will join the fray and get administrative jobs. Academics will stay put. People will not encourage their kids to go into medicine. More minorities, women and foreign docs.

But the younger docs are stuck unless they have other talents.

This is intentional. Minority doctors will flood the system. Standards will be lowered for admission and standards.

This is Statism. Incompetent hustlers, hate and elitist stupidity runs the entire country.

* Doctor turned nurse.
* Or they could answer the nurse triage line of many health insurance companies.
* Pharmaceutical sales are an instant fit with many doctors. * Selling health insurance plans.
* Arranging medical tourism or actually moving overseas to sell their services.
* Medical missionary, free place to live while you serve, but with an environment that protects and provides
