A $1 billion embassy? With a moat? Yes we can!

For all of us who feared that last year's stimulus money was largely wasted (and it was), now behold something to make you even angrier: America's $1 billion new embassy planned for London. Certain to cost much more over the years of construction, this embassy will come complete with that great American symbol: a moat.

Wait, a moat? Yes. In fact, this monstrosity is a symbol not of American openness, but our fear. What's next, turrets from which to pour hot lead on visitors to the embassy? Why not Marines with crossbows on the roof?

After 9/11, the old embassy in Grosvenor Square became a bunker that harmed local land value. The new site will not do so, as it is located in a place described by the Times Online as the, "Battersea wasteland where the vast crystalline cube, surrounded by a moat, will be built." Furthermore, it will be located, "on a former industrial site behind Battersea power station known for its gay clubs . . ." Well, hidden behind a power station I am sure it will project American power nicely.

The $1 billion dollar is more than the US has ever spent on an embassy. That means it is more than was spent on embassies in war zones such as Kabul and Baghdad. Sure, London is more expensive real estate, but if we are building an embassy in an industrial slum, and building it with a moat, doesn’t it seem like $1 billion is a stretch?

By the way, our old embassy has already been purchased. We move out in 2016 and the old building, symbol of the US' prestige and glory, will be converted in to a Qatari-owned luxury hotel. Not word yet on whether the Qatari owners will cut down the Ronald Reagan

I used to think the Progressives wanted to take us back to the 1970’s. Then it seemed like we were going back to the 1930’s. Turns out I was wrong. We’re going back to the 1300’s! Whoo-Hoo! I get to be a serf!

What does it matter if they do NOT know or care about properly vetting personnel?

It’s a joke coming under the administration of a guy in the WH who was not and never will be properly checked for eligibility to hold the Presidency.

After we get the ‘moat technology’ down in England maybe we can apply it to the US/Mexican border.

Good point. Now the government cannot say we lack a way to keep out people we want to keep out. Our government has mastered the Middle Ages technology known as moats.

We sold the old embassy for $1 billion, so the cost of the new one is a wash. This is a non-issue.

Wrong for a few reasons. One, $1 billion purchase does not include a 17.5% VAT tax. Two, the $1 billion price is set, while the $1 billion purchase price will skyrocket once construction starts. Remember, we do not move in for 6 years. Third, you are discounting the substantial moving and logistical costs of moving complexes.

"...What's next, turrets from which to pour hot lead on visitors to the embassy?..."

Why yes, if that is an option. It would be super cool!

"...Why not Marines with crossbows on the roof?..."

Because we have marines with TOW missiles on the roof, which is way more fun.

I have read several different articles and some say it's estimated to cost 500 million while others say it's going to cost 1 billion. Does anyone know what the actual estimated cost is, and why there are differing numbers in all the articles I have been reading?
