Bush 41 to endorse Hutchison [Texas Governor]
Dallas Morning News ^ | 1-20-10 | Wayne Slater

Look for Kay Bailey Hutchison to expand her circle of support from the Bushies in her bid to unseat Gov. Rick Perry. Hutchison this week added endorsements from James Baker, who served as secretary of state under George HW Bush. Earlier, Bush 43 Vice President Dick Cheney came to Texas to publicly endorse Hutchison. And the Republican senator has plenty of support from one-time aides to George W. Bush - informal advisers Karl Rove and Karen Hughes as well as former education secretary Margaret Spellings.

Now, comes Poppy Bush. A source close to the campaign confirms that Bush 41 himself will soon publicly endorse Hutchison. That pretty much leaves Bush 43, who says he's remaining neutral in the race.

end snips......

Ex-Secretary of State James Baker endorses Hutchison for Texas governor

HOUSTON – Former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker endorsed U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison on Tuesday in her bid to unseat Gov. Rick Perry.

the Greater Houston Pachyderm Club, a GOP group, said that although he's backed Perry in the past, it's time for the governor to go. "I'm not going to stand up here and trash him," Baker said, but "nine years is enough."

snip correction;

Baker, appearing with Hutchison at the Greater Houston Pachyderm Club, a GOP group, said that although he’s backed Perry in the past, it’s time for the governor to go. “I’m not going to stand up here and trash him,” Baker said, but “nine years is enough.”

Don't know much about Texas politics but if one gets into a debate with James Baker you better know damn well what you're talking about.

I must admit, Texas politics is an absolute mystery to me. I don’t see Kay Baily Hutchison as any great leader, intellect or conservative. She’s just barely an adequate Senator, and reliable vote. Maybe Perry has his problems - I don’t know - but what would inspire Hutchison, who is a little long in the tooth, to want to get into such a contested race when she could stroll to reelection in the Senate?

That should pretty much guarantee a win for Perry.

The more there is of this kind of thing the better Rick Perry’s chances become!

As usual, the inside the beltway crowd has entirely misread the tea leaves.

"...but if one gets into a debate with James Baker you better know damn well what you're talking about. "

That is a certainty. I don't agree with some (perhaps many)of Baker's policy positions, but he is one of the best attorneys in the country, and one of the better attorneys in the last 50 years. He's not a guy to be trifled with.
