The tragedy in Haiti has touched so many. I can’t even begin to wrap my head around the images my amazing colleagues are bringing us from the devastation, each story more heartbreaking than the next.

Two days ago I got a call from a good friend of mine in L.A. who helps to run Angel House Orphanage in Haiti. Her name is Shannon Hoffman, and I used to work with her husband Gary who is a radio news anchor and reporter at KFI-AM 640. Gary and I were also field reporters together in Sacramento at Newstalk 1530 KFBK, and we have covered a lot of natural disasters together, but nothing of course, like this. Shannon called me to verify that a producer who said they were from Fox News, who had called one of their adoptive parents, was legitimate. It was in fact one of ours, and I let her know that we would do whatever we could to help get the word out about what is going on with their situation.

The founder of the orphanage arrived Saturday in Haiti, along with a doctor, and structural engineer and have been assessing the situation. One of their top priorities is to find the legal paperwork that will help them get the children out of Haiti and safely to the U.S. Here is the email update from the Hoffmans I received today…

Lot’s of amputations being done to save their lives. These orphans are probably better educated than their peers because the orphanages are run by the Catholic Church. This explains the uniforms. The orphans can come. But don’t let another Mariel Boat Lift happen. My Haitian coworkers told me that when Duvalier ran it in to the sea, that the Rich went to France, the Middle Class went to America, and what’s left, is best left there.
