Vitamin D and calcium supplementation reduces cancer risk (mineral deficiencies, nutrigenomics)

Magnesium is a must. The diets of all Americans are likely to be deficient. Even a mild deficiency causes sensitiveness to noise, nervousness, irritability, mental depression, confusion, twitching, trembling, apprehension, insomnia, muscle weakness and cramps in the toes, feet, legs, or fingers.

Folic acid deficiency can lead to neural tube closure defects (NTDs) and anemia.

Zinc deficiency affects immune function, contributing to as many as 800,000 child deaths per year.

Iodine deficiency is the leading preventable cause of brain damage and it can significantly lower the IQ of whole populations.

Nutrigenomics - another term to make it seem you know what you're talking about. ;-)

As a biologist I certainly understand the importance of good nutrition. But I would ‘guess’ that unless you are on an unhealthy diet or the world’s fussiest eater, you’re probably getting sufficient vitamins and minerals in your daily diet. Certainly, vitamin supplements do help some people, but most supplements are urinated away within hours. Just try to eat healthy.

Man everyone wants in on the -omics thing, proteomics for example, I even read a thing about a materials guy wants to start calling his work materiomics or something. I still say genomics was here first you guys find your own suffix!

/rant.

Nice post. Alot of people could stave off certain problems and mitigate others if they were aware about repsonsible use of nutritional supplements remember, you are what you eat!

Just try to eat healthy.

Get real. ;-)

I'm too lazy to keep an eye out for my magnesium intake so I just supplement. And if you've been following the vitamin D threads then you may agree that supplementation is the only practical way. You don't have to agree but you may.

The NIH info on latitudes-sunlight-vitamin D is something I've begun to harp on. You simply can't make much if any vitamin D from sunlight in the cooler months.

Vit B and C are water soluble and need replenishment every day.

My doc recommends 1200 Calcium + D as well.

Magnisium helps prevent constipation from the Calcium.

my two cents.

One thing a lot of people do to get more calcium is drink more milk, but they drink low-fat milk, but the body needs fat to absorb the calcium effectively from what I’ve read. Support your local dairy farmer and drink an ice cold glass of MILK. Got milk?

well you might be a biologist, but with our depleted soils and commercial fertilizers and genetically altered foods, we can use all the help we can get.

I take my vitamins, feel way better than if I do not.

Thanks so much.

AND with Zero’s health care system we are going to need all the help we can get. We cannot rely on their death panels to protect our lives.

How about this: if I do not take potassium and magnesium daily, I have heart palpitations. I do not think I could get enough of these two minerals solely by diet.

Eat some meat, eat lots of vegetables, eat healthy fats, cut back on the carbs, get out and work in the sun. Take some time to have fun.

Your body will get what it needs.

As it turns out, if you are sickly and home bound, your vitamin D levels will be lower than someone who is healthy and getting out of the house.

...get out and work in the sun.

But according to the NIH info, you won't make much if any vitamin D from sunlight for much of the year.

"Sun exposure Most people meet their vitamin D needs through exposure to sunlight [5,31]. Ultraviolet (UV) B radiation with a wavelength of 290-315 nanometers penetrates uncovered skin and converts cutaneous 7-dehydrocholesterol to previtamin D3, which in turn becomes vitamin D3 [9,32,33]. Season, geographic latitude, time of day, cloud cover, smog, skin melanin content, and sunscreen are among the factors that affect UV radiation exposure and vitamin D synthesis [33]. The UV energy above 42 degrees north latitude (a line approximately between the northern border of California and Boston) is insufficient for cutaneous vitamin D synthesis from November through February [5]; in far northern latitudes, this reduced intensity lasts for up to 6 months. In the United States, latitudes below 34 degrees north (a line between Los Angeles and Columbia, South Carolina) allow for cutaneous production of vitamin D throughout the year [27]."

http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamind.asp

This requires some thought. Even in the southern states there must be some months when little vitamin D can be made from sunlight.

I have to disagree with you on the V D3.

I was tested and severly lacking.
Two fold aint no sunshine where we live and we do most of our outing after sunset.

The other vitamins yeah I agree a healthy balanced diet will get it done and then you are just pissin away $$$ taking vitamens.

There are the rare instances of people being genetically lacking to produce or absorb nutrients.

One thing a lot of people do to get more calcium is drink more milk

Milk is supplemented with artificial Vit D, which inhibits magnesium absorption. Not good.

I've been having those symptoms ever since the election last Nov.

Don't think magnesium is gonna fix it.

Thanks.

I am well updated on that fact.

For my/family health I do quite allot of study before taking action.

And I had my blood tested too.
