Cell Phone Service Interruption

TOPICS: Local News; Miscellaneous; Weird Stuff

About a hour ago cell phone service for AT&T went out in the N/E section(as far as I know) of San Antonio. People began to show up at the market center where I was( trying to get an answer as well). A thought came to me that if this glitch could happen so easily here in San Antonio, how easy would it be for the president to disconnect the entire system or specific areas he wants to shut down.

You think Obummer is testing the his ability to turn off the phones and the internet. It could really happen! what is our back up plan?

Excellent thinking, NCFool. Yes, we need a back up plan. What would you suggest: address book list? Please ping me if you have an answer. Thanks and it is always best to be prepared. Wish I had a ham radio set.

Wish I had a ham radio set.

Wishing is not enough; one fine Saturday you need to visit your local testing people and pass a simple exam for which all questions and answers are published and there are many Web sites that offer these same questions explained and organized.

Once that is done and you have your license, get yourself a radio or two. These radios can talk to repeaters even when there is no cell coverage. Quite handy if you sometimes find yourself away from the city. Also, as you know, ham radio is independent from centralized telecommunication services, is capable of surviving practically any emergency, and can work on any energy source that is available.

Still out here in San Antonio. Even the electric company is able to reboot there system here after an electrical storm. Keep your powder dry

Today in OKC, while watching College Football, DishTV put up a blue box notice, "Your smart card does not have permission to access this program", or something similar. We had been watching it for over 2 hours already. Then the programing on all channels was out.

Could not view any channels, yet I could see the guide. Call to Dish and 15 mins later we had it back.

Weird.

Everytime I think of AT&T, I think of the movie “The President’s Analyst,” where it turns out that the United States is actually run by “The Phone Company” (a thinly disguised AT&T).

If they shut down the relay towers, everyone's cell phone becomes nothing more than a paper weight.
