Gun buy-back misguided (from the Catholic Diocese of Baltimore)

I do not understand how a gun buy-back (CR, Aug. 27) “paves the way to peace.” Five previous efforts offer no indication of doing so.

Would not putting easy gun buy-back money in the hands of criminals that have guns just encourage them to steal guns? We can blame guns for a lack of peace, but if we want to respect humanity’s dignity we have to blame criminals. Crime is a choice.

I do not know how to cure criminals. I do know that we need to protect ourselves from them and that a gun is a reasonable thing to own until there is a cure.

Where people own guns, crime rates are sometimes lower. Apparently criminals have enough sense to avoid places where they know they will encounter resistance.

Jesus apparently knew this. He told his apostles at the last supper that from now on anyone that did not own a sword should sell his coat and buy one.

in a related note, one notorious Catholic had this to say:
Let's put it another way: we already have ample evidence that making it illegal to carry a legally registered pistol didn't prevent this poor young woman from being shot. If she could have legally carried one herself, she probably would have been able to defend herself, which nobody else could be bothered to do.

Gun Buy Back is really the original “CASH FOR CLUNKERS PROGRAM”. And makes about as much sense.

“CASH FOR CLUNKERS PROGRAM” LOL

I sold 7 completely useless totally crap guns today at a gun buy-back for $150 each (2 of which I paid $5.00 each for parts only). Broken stock .22’s, a shotgun that fell apart when the officer racked it and a handful of old break-action single shot no-name shotguns, one with no forearm or butt stock!

I ALMOST feel guilty! My wife and I smiled all the way home. The money will be put to good use when I purchase a top quality piece, probably a Kimber.

You should have worked your way back up the line and seen if anyone had brought anything decent to turn in, and given them the $150. They’d get out of waiting till the end of the line, and you might get a $500 gun in exchange for a $5 one. I’ve heard of people doing this before.
