Well his standpoint, maybe the Muslims did make a great contribution. They brought the zero to the west. They'd stolen it from the Indians of course. They were occupying India at the time, and occupying Spain when they brought it to the West. It only "got out" when they were forced out of Spain. The final push of that effort was in 1492.
The knowledge of the zero then was passed to the rest of Europe by the Spanish Jews, who learned of it from the Islamics.
