If They Even Lost Kos, Geithner is Doomed

Certainly one cannot say that Markos Moulitsas, the fellow that invented DailyKos.com, is the sage of the Democratic Party specifically or the left generally, but he does have a certain following as well as a high profile among activists if not Party regulars and political bosses. So when Kos begins Twittering that Sec. of the Treasury Tim Geithner is failing, this is not a good sign for Obama's guy.

On Sunday, March 23, Kos wrote a Twitter posting stating "Geithner is starting to look like Obama's Rumsfeld."

To employ a saying: I know Donald Rumsfeld, Tim Geithner is no Donald Rumsfeld. Still, this could mark the beginning of the end of Tim Geithner as Obama's Sec. of Treasury. His bad start when his tax cheating was revealed, compounded with his lackluster performances in press conferences, his claims that the next press conference will have all the answers at which time he tells us the same thing he's already said, and, finally, his mishandling of the AIG bonuses incident is a veritable cornucopia of failure. For a man that is supposedly the smartest president we've had since Carter his choice of Geithner is not reassuring. And when even a kool aide drinker like Kos starts dissing Obama's guy, well, who cannot suspect that the end is near?

Of course, the better comparison, at least as far as public perception is concerned, is not Donald Rumsfeld. It is, rather, Bush's hurricane Katrina morass with one time FEMA boss Michael Brown. The media made a big deal of it when President Bush said, "You're doing a heckuva job, Brownie" as the post Katrina mess deepened. Here we see revealed the same sort of tin-ear that Bush showed as everything spun out of control after Katrina with his blind support of Brown in Obama's blind support of Geithner...

Well, we know Brown wasn't the problem with Katrina, but the analogy with perception seems a good one here with Geithner.

This would be at least the fourth serious comparison of Geithner with Brown I’ve seen here in the last week. Tick-tock for Timmy...

Obama is doomed with Timmy. The longer he keeps him the more he will fogger up the economy and the sooner he dumps him the larger the political humiliation will be.

This is a prime example of a difference between Liberals and Conservatives. Conservatives predicted this, could have told you that Geithner should never have been Sec. of the Treasury....Conservatives knew he was a bad choice based on facts and past performance. Liberals emote and had no clue, no care, were not able to predict Geithner's crappy performance despite his past behaviors. Liberals were so stuck in their ideology that they believed in Geithner; they were not able to take information, process it and predict an outcome....Liberals emote, they don't think and they never realize what they are doing is wrong they just think they haven't done enough of it yet (Jim Quinn).

Obama’s Rumsfeld... that’s cute. Rummy lasted six years. Timmay’s struggling to make the three-month milestone.

At the time Geithner was facing his tax issues during confirmation, Obama had political capital to burn. All Obama had to do was say “I need this guy”, and everybody in Washington was afraid to challenge him.

The result, of course, is that Geithner did not get a good look before being confirmed. The Senate just punted on their duty to advise and consent. They gave Obama what he wanted.

Now, if there was some deep wisdom in the Obama camp, and Obama’s stratospheric (at the time) reserves of political capital was the result of intelligence, competence, and confidence that he would be carrying out policies that the public demanded, then the consequences of just pushing Geithner through would not be so severe. However, now it appears that none of these things are true. There is no competence, intelligence or public policy core.

But Geithner is (part of) the problem here: another techocrat who thinks he’s smarter than the market trying to fix problems created by technocrats (both in Washington and on Wall Street) who thought they were smarter than the market. He made a mess of Indonesia’s economy when he had the Indonesia portfolio at the IMF, so naturally he was the one smart enough to fix the U.S. economy.

That, his screw-up at the IMF, is the real reason he shouldn’t have been confirmed, not because his tax preparation turned out to be sub-optimal. Remember, it has been said, and I think experimentally verified, that if you give 150 ‘tax experts’ the same very complicated set of raw income and deduction data, you get 150 different returns. Truth be told a Treasury Secretary who knew from experience that the tax code had become an incomprehensible monstrosity could have been a good thing.

I hope they keep the tax cheat, Timmy “Turbo Tax Cheat” Geither. The longer he stays around showing his incompetence, the better it will be to get rid of as many corrupt Demoncraps in the 2010 elections. If he goes early, we lose a lightning rod.

This snotbag should not even be mentioned in the same text with Rumsfield. And most older folks, like myself, know that the Katrina mess laid in the hands of the state officials, not federal. Do you ever here of Texas asking for federal aid for tornadoes.......no. Colorado for ice storms.......no.
