England: Stabbed, Gutted and Bleeding Out
publiusforum.com ^ | 08/01/08 | Warner Todd Huston

Most haughty Europeans look down their nose at we "violent Americans." They sniff the air at the ugly American and assume that they are, one and all, more "civilized" than we gauche colonials. Look at all the gun violence in America, they say. They tsk. tsk us for the deaths by gun. Certainly they are better than we?

Now shocking news emerges out of England this month. It is estimated that 25,000 stabbings have occurred in Jolly, more civilized ol' England in the last 12 months alone. You read that right, there have been 25,000 incidents of knife violence in England in the last year.

Worse, those numbers generally only include incidents where blood is drawn.

The count includes only murders, stabbings where blood is spilled and knifepoint muggings. If less-serious crimes like threats or illegal possession were included, numbers would be far higher.

And what is the government doing? Well, in truth it doesn't matter a bit what they are or are not doing. Since the common people have no right to defend themselves in England, they are like sheep to the slaughter....

I read a thread on FR months ago about the British woman who started the law to ban knives, got herself killed by her nephew with another weapon. The irony...

Regarding the 1st paragraph about elitist snotty Euros, Canadians have the same worse mentality like the Euros. Everytime something bad happens in the country, canucks automatically’ blame Americans. Example, someone got shot in vancouver? The response is: “well, the guns are coming from the border, ergo, it;s not our fault. We’re civilized unlike those Yanks,”.

Yeah those bad grammar dogs should be careful with their knives.

Nevermind the downfall of a once great country.

Bad grammar is the first sign of societal deterioration ... and anyway, it isn’t my fault England’s a mess.

You lost me when you got petty instead of discussing the issue. And if you think grammar is the only criteria for legitimate discussion, you might not want to read the ACTUAL (not the cleaned up) works of our Founders. They often did not worry much about spelling and grammar.

They're just going through Phase 1 of ‘Bring Back the Sword.’ Within 2 to 3 years every respectable Brit will be sporting a sword or cutlass on their sides and duels will be the norm again. Nostalgia for the Wilkinson.

Oh, yes, we Americans are just so prone to violence. It's amazing. The last figures I could find claimed that in 2000, we had approximately 63,000 similar gun crimes. Of course, we have 5x their population.

So, we've got half the armed violent crime rate of our cousins across the puddle.

Funny, I'd rather be an unharmed, violent and uncivilized brute than be stabbed.

Lost me in the first sentence with the misused nominative pronoun.

Personally, I found the fact that they mismatched a third-person possessive pronoun with a singular noun more jarring.

The problem is that they have no conception of how to stop crime. They lost their common sense decades ago. They think the way to do it is ban weapons. But it doesn’t work. What they should do is throw the bruts in jail and throw away the key. But that is even more alien to them than guns.

Just to be fair ...

In the UK (population c. 60.5m) there were 765 reported incidents of murder for 2005-6 (Home Office, undated) - a rate of about 1.1 per 100,000.

In the US (population c. 298.5m) there were an estimated 16,137 homicides in 2004 (FBI, 2006a) - a rate of about 5.4 per 100,000.

The US has 5 times the murder rate, and 20 times the actual murders. So all the bluster on this thread is pretty silly.
