The controlling state board that regulates and makes rules for the various high school football programs in the state of Connecticut has decided that it isn't nice to win. At least it isn't nice to win with a lopsided score.
From now on, any coach who is "unsportsman" like enough to win by "blowout" will be suspended and unable to coach the team's next game. (See story by clicking here)
The football committee of the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference, the state board that governs high school sports, has adopted a "score management" policy to keep teams from winning by more than 50 points.Let me annotate that last line to let you more fully understand what this "coach" is saying:Some Section 1 coaches in the Lower Hudson Valley for the most part think it is a good idea, and Suffern coach Bill Delaney said he would welcome its adoption in New York state.
"I think it is a very appropriate rule," Delaney said. "To run up the score is not showing good sportsmanship, which is what we're trying to teach our players."
"I think it is a very appropriate rule," (Delaney whined in a limp voice)
"To run up the score is not showing good sportsmanship..." (Because my guys all suck and it would hurt their self esteem if they lose too badly. They are such delicate little wimps and i just can't take their tears anymore...sniff, sniff)
"...which is what we're trying to teach our players." (That winning is only legitimate if we all agree that winners should be allowed to win, unless it hurts our widdle feewings that they won and then we can stomp around, cry and say "it all just isn't fair" and take away that win!)
...There you go. That about explains it better.
Winning is unfair. Excellence is baaaad. And a corresponding lack of ability is really, really OK.
Listen, I am the last person to claim to be a sports fan. In fact, I think all school sports programs should be done away with and the money spent on IMPORTANT things in school (which would be just about ANYTHING but sports as far as I am concerned). But this wimp like focus on making sure everyone "feels" good when they play a game is feminizing our boys, making us averse to winning, and eliminating any drive to excellence in our society.
"Coach" Delaney, if your team is so bad that they get creamed every time they step out on the field, maybe it is YOU who is to blame as much as your half woman-like team!
This PC garbage is maddening!
Living in CT as a Conservative is really hard due to our congresscritters but this was nuts. WTIC.com. has a great talk show- Jim Vicevich is host and it streams from 10-12a.m. on the web. He discussed this today and there was a overwhelming response against this crazy decision.
I listen to Jim Vicevich every day. He's fantastic. The only pathetic thing on WTIC is the Colin and Bruce show at 3:00 after Rush. I can take Colin because at least he has his own opinion but Bruce is an idiot.
Connecticut is a lost State. We're losing business by the droves and taxes keep going up. They just don't get it.
Connecticut ping!
Please Freepmail me if you want on or off my infrequent Connecticut ping list.
If the regulators of high school sports would pay better attention to parity instead of geography there would be better competition and better sports.
The rule against run-ups is to avoid embarrassment by the regulators not the kids. It's a sign that someone is not doing his job.
I agree. I have three years to go until I retire and then it's on to NH for the summers and AZ for the winters. CT has been my home since childhood, I've gotten my degrees from two of it's universities and worked my whole life here. I raised three children here.
Sadly, I can't wait to leave
Remember when Bruce was on alone 10 years ago and the dems tried the midnight basketball thing?
I got on and told him how racist it was to actually think black men are incapable of controlling themselves so we have to throw basketballs at them, and he remarked, "Yeah, but just think of how much better the NBA will be soon?"
I was stunned and just told him that if he said that statement the week before he'd be fired.
There was about 10 seconds of silence with no comment from him, I'd bet his station manager called him on it.
My Freshman year, our main rival beat us 53-3. And the last 2 touchdowns were from their JV squad
we got even as the years went by, ours was a new team, we never had a football program in town
My sr year we beat them 36 to 14 or something like that.
This is such a stupid rule. But I guess we don't want to damage anyone's self esteem...
This is the useless CIAC.
These beaurocrapic idiots also prohibit home schooled kids from participating in any high school sports.
One of my kids played soccer on quite a winning team. This team was so winning that their coach occasionally instructed them to pass the ball four times after the defenders' 50 yard line before attempting a shot. That seemed to work well as a compromise because the team gained in passing skills, while not giving up. Their opponents were embarrassed when the ball kept getting by, somehow, even with all those weird pass moves.
Anyone involved with high school (or younger) team sports knows that some coaches are impossibly irrational. Hey, that reminds me of Connecticut legislators... it's regional!
Wow... I sure wish I had heard you on the air with Brucie that day! Of course I didn't know you then, but I sure would've remembered that call.
That was me against Diane yesterday, too, when she totally wigged out at my comment that the CBS reporter is going to be elevated to sainthood while deaths of our troops are treated as fodder to bash Bush
