Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg vowed the federal government would rebuild the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland on Tuesday, calling it a 'cathedral' of American infrastructure.
'This is no ordinary bridge, this is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure,' he said. 'It has been part of the skyline of this region longer than many of us has been alive.'
He cautioned that the 'path to normalcy' for the Baltimore community after the tragedy 'will not be easy, will not be quick, and will not be inexpensive
Buttigieg spoke at a press conference in Baltimore Tuesday afternoon, several hours after the bridge collapsed in the early hours of the morning after it was struck by a cargo ship
He said he was 'moved' to see the state, county, and city response to the tragedy, praising Maryland Gov. Wes Moore for his immediate attention to the issue.
'He was already awake and hard at work when I reached him in the middle of the night,' Buttigieg said.
Buttigieg reminded everyone listening that it was 'excruciating day' for the families of the missing as search and rescue efforts continued.
'They are hoping and praying and we are hoping and praying with them,' he said. 'We are all putting our arms around the community of Baltimore
He vowed ongoing investigations into what caused the cargo ship to hit the bridge support which caused the catastrophic collapse early Tuesday morning.
'In many ways our work is just beginning, to rebuild this bridge and deal with impacts in the meantime,'
'I have no doubt that we will rebuild together and that Baltimore will come back stronger than ever before,' he said

They have to get that bridge and ship out of the river as fast as possible.

Get De Santis to do it. He rebuilt our causeway on the Gulf Coast within days after it had been destroyed.
But whatever you do, don’t expect Buttigeig to do it. One of the most unqualified of all of Biden’s unqualified picks. Bring back people who actually know how to do things and know their job.
Get some barges in there and move the fallen structure out of the way of the main shipping lane and continue shipping to that port, until everything is ready to start the repairs.
No need to close it off entirely.

It really shouldn’t be too big of a deal. Keep shipping open and work around it. Have the ship traffic line up and give them set hours to move through the area. When they need to close it entirely to complete the repairs then close it off for how ever long they need. But, that time should be months and months away at this point.
The way biden’s admin will do it is to shut it off completely for years, I’m guessing
Why would this close a port?
Looking at the aerial photos it appears that at least one of the passages between the support structures could have the bridge debris cleared out and open in about a week.
But buttplugged needs to stay away from rebuilding the bridge, the gubbermit probably can't finish it until sometime around 2074 (if ever).

Yeah - it’s such a great “cathedral” that it collapsed with one slow strike from a shipping vessel. If that’s Butttricks idea of “American valoos” I don’t want any part of that.
A real transportation director would’ve had the tug boats clear the shipping lanes already - not primadonna himself on tv spewing meaningless platitudes.
So, everything bad vis-a-vis logistics that happens going forward will be blamed on this, much like COVID was blamed for all deaths?
What a gift for the trite and obvious. It is a great loss and tragedy to be sure but it is one freaking bridge in a huge country. I think somehow we will survive in spite of little peter.

Easier said than done.
First, Buttigieg needs to ensure that all the contracts go out to companies operated by black/Latino/indigenous/women owned businesses.
Second, white privilege and preferred pronoun training has to be held and documented before work can start.
Third, he's got to figure out how much to overbill so that Baltimore's civic leaders and various Democrat politicians can get their share of the graft and kickbacks.
These things take a lot of time.
Just sink Baltimore it is too far gone.

It’s an important bridge due to it’s location and traffic volume, but calling it “cathedrals of American infrastructure” is a stretch. I driven over it numerous times and it never struck me as anything but a utilitarian bridge that got the job done.
