Best Alternative to Gmail

Posted on 10/10/2018 5:48:50 PM PDT by Red in Blue PA

I am looking to shed all things Google, starting with my gmail account. I opened it in 2007 with the thought that I would have it for decades as Google was a behemoth of a company which would not disappear and which could be trusted.

But alas, I now have not an ounce of trust in Google. So much is tied to my gmail account that I want to make a move to a company which will 1) stand the test of time and 2) can be trusted.

I am quite sure I am not the only person thinking this way at this point in time. Every day something comes out about this company which makes me sick to do any business with them. Already made Bing my default search engine.

Any ideas?

That said, I like the Yahoo interface better than Outlook

Don't pay attention to the interface. If you want e-mail that's not served to you by an ultra-liberal company, then, don't do Yahoo or Google. Outlook/Hotmail is from Microsoft, which is mostly liberal too, but ,they don't mess with your email as much as Yahoo or Google. Don't give your business to either Google or Yahoo/HuffPost/AOL.

aol, yahoo, HuffPost. They’re the same company. Don’t give them any of your business.

If you do want an email address in perpetuity, I would go to GoDaddy.com and buy a domain. You can buy your name, or something more innocuous. Then pay them the few bucks a year to have them host it - or take the domain somewhere else for hosting. But the value in doing this is that nobody can close down your email address on you because you can just move it somewhere else, and since you’re paying for hosting, you shouldn’t have to deal with advertising or have to sign away your privacy rights (but read the user agreement carefully.)

One thing most people do not consider is that almost all of these Gmail alternatives will eventually get bought out by Google, and Google will get your information that way. It is one of the new easy ways for the connected to get rich. Always do whatever you can to minimize how much information you give out online because you never know who Google will buy out next.

*****They have a starter account that is free, but storage is relatively limited. Great for a trial run though, and adequate for many*****

That “free” account also requires Google.com javascript. I don’t believe any of the Protonmail hype.

Bing as your search engine means you're still being tracked. Consider DuckDuckGo for search. Nice interface, funny name, clean as a whistle and absolutely NO tracking.

Consider adding Ghostery as an add-on to your browser. Stops trackers in their tracks :)

***Tutanota***

Tutanota is based in Russia and after a period of time will disable your email service until you provide a phone number.

Thanks for the heads-up! I had thought it was in Italy - which shows just how dumb I am about all of this stuff.

But I stand by my statement that nothing is ever - or forever - going to be really ‘secure’; and folks should proceed with that assumption and use it as a guiding principle as to what they send out through the ‘ether’.

‘You pays yer money and you takes yer choice.’

Outlook is pretty good for the email I use for when I buy stuff.
https://outlook.live.com/owa/

I have a yahoo.com account but there is a lot of spam as Yahoo is trying to entice you to pay for a spam filter of around $2.99 a month or so. Their upgraded look is not bad at all.

I use Thunderbird otherwise for family. I have a website domain that I own.

Use a different front end for your gmail account. On Mac, try Airmail. On IOS, use the Apple Mail app. All those problems go away.

I have been considering buying my own domain name and using a web host. What’s to stop the hosting service or someone else from infiltration?

I also considered buying the domain name and operating my own server but Hillary demonstrated the folly of trusting others with private security.

Staying with Earthlink for now. $5/ month

Yeah. I’m pretty satisfied with Protonmail. Interface could use a few tweaks. Overall, I am satisfied. It isn’t Gmail, and that is a good thing.

It’s a paid servvice but not outrageously expensive. I use (My name)@reagan.com

It’s an account I use mainly for my conservative-leaning friends, but could be used as a primary email very easily.
