A BAR owner accused of killing a customer by letting him drink 56 “shots” of spirits went on trial for manslaughter yesterday.
The 57-year-old man was trying to beat a record of 55 shots in one evening at Le Starter, a bar in Clermont-Ferrand, central France.
The landlord allegedly told his customer “only 12 to go” as he neared his target.
After completing the challenge, he was carried home by his daughter and friends – but he had a heart attack and died the next day.
The daughter’s lawyer Antoine Portal said before the trial: “It is not known whether he would still be alive if he had not drunk the last 12 shots. But it was a case of inciting someone to consume.”
The bar owner’s lawyer Renaud Portejoie admitted that a “leader board” alerting customers to the existing record for shots was “a mistake”. But he added: “No one forced him to take on the challenge. Customers are responsible for themselves.”
Health chiefs in France have warned about an increase in binge drinking – and claim young people there are copying British culture.
Hope he doesn’t have a Viking funeral. It could take a while...

Absolutely, and they should be charged as accomplices if this is the path they choose to go down. Because everyone around him was guilty by these standards.
Who else was there watching? How many KNEW the number of shots he had? I bet there was yelling and counting.
Arrest everyone in the bar or no one.

What was the time lapse between his binge and his heart attack?
"next day" does not define this. It could have been Ten minutes or ten hours.

The last Viking funeral I saw was when Ragna jumped out of the coffin and it did not end well for the French.
I'm not saying he should be charged, but if I was a business owner, I wouldn't have continued serving him. I don't think a person who had had 43 shots can validly engage in a contract.
There’s also a story of some Irish boxer from a long time ago who drank some ridiculous number of whiskey “tumblers”. And then FOOLISHLY followed this with a glass of ice water. At the time, it was considered unhealthy to drink ice water on a hot day. When the guy keeled over, no one thought the problem was the whiskey — clearly the water was to blame. Ah! Ireland!
