Gold pocket watch recovered from the body of the richest man on the Titanic
Daily Mail ^ | April 27, 2024 | Peter Henn and Richard Percival

The pocket watch of the richest man on the Titanic – recovered when his body was fished out of the Atlantic seven days after the tragedy – was sold a record-breaking £1.175 million yesterday.

The timepiece belonged to John Jacob Astor IV, a US business magnate who was among more than 1,500 people who died when the ship struck an iceberg in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

His 14-carat gold Waltham watch was sold at Henry Aldridge & Son auction house in Wiltshire for a record-breaking £1.175 million, six times the guide price, matching the record paid for a Titanic artifact – the violin played by bandmaster Wallace Hartley.

What about that raft that fat chick hogged that caused Jack to freeze to death and drown?

Last seen smoking a cigarette on the starboard wing while chatting up another passenger. Like an absolute boss. A billionaire by today’s standards but sees his pregnant wife to safety and goes down with the ship. Don’t think you’d find any modern day business magnate doing that. They’d be trying to save their own asses.

Nowadays I can’t imagine many Western men believing they should give their seat on the lifeboat to a woman; that’s where we are now. Anyone who believes we may have another draft is delusional; the last decades have made it clear there is no legal way to include women in it. This is the flip side of insisting they can be included in all units (including combat units).

If you’re saying this was posted, I searched and didn’t find one. This is SIMILAR to an article posted BEFORE the auction but now gives the sale price of 1 million after the previous article suggested it would go for 150K.

This story always interested me because my 2nd cousin in Newport RI had been engaged to his son and broke off the engagement a few weeks before the wedding because she considered him too immature. I know she told me the story but it’s one of those that went in one ear and couldn’t wait to get out the other.

Waltham made very good watches. I have one that was manufactured in 1918. Keeps perfect time.

Have you seen the latest commercial where the lady is talking to the camera and says (paraphrasing) “if you want equality in the workplace, remove women from the workplace.”

And then she goes on to say “that’s what gun control is all about”.

B-but the rich guys in Titanic connived their way onto lifeboats and let the poor people drown or freeze. Are you saying that a movie, made by rich people to make them richer, lied about rich people?

LOL! Mythbusters did a show on this and proved she could have moved her fat butt and let him on. She must have been a democrat and saw herself as elitist and Jack as the lowly servant.

No Astor relations, but my grandmother told me that her aunt (and as you will see, uncle) perished on the Titanic. I had trouble tracking down exactly which ones, but she told me that her aunt refused to get in a lifeboat without her husband. Her grandmother's maiden name was Carter, and she immigrated from England. There was a Carter couple on the Titanic whose story fit her description. The link says that he refused to get in the lifeboat, and she would not leave without him, but according to other sources, places in the lifeboat were for women and children, only, so he, especially being a man of the cloth, would have been ineligible.

Jeff Bezos has had enough work done on his squeeze, that she’d be a perfect flotation device.
