Thousands of Canary Islanders took to the streets of the Atlantic archipelago today to protest against the problems caused by mass tourism and demand their politicians take action.
Demonstrators packed into Weyler Square in the Tenerife capital Santa Cruz, the start point for a march on the Brit-popular holiday island, just before midday with banners including one that said: 'You enjoy we suffer' in English.
Others said: 'Where is the money from tourism?' and 'Tourist moratorium now.'

What good is tourism if the natives can’t afford to live there?
No Ibiza for you!
I wonder if this is a misdirect by the media.
They forgot how to spell illegal immigrants.
I’ve heard that they make pretty good cigars in the Canary Islands.
The main gripe among locals is the rising costs of renting and buying homes, as landlords continue to buy up Airbnbs and tourist lets, reducing supply and pushing up prices.
Is Brandon President there?
They are toast either way. The Great Middle Class is disappearing worldwide due to govt policies. Be rich or be poor, those are the choices now.
I had sympathy for the islanders until I caught this in the article:
“Today we cannot forget these people who are putting their lives at risk for our Earth.”
With Earth Day a couple days off, I smell a commie. I can see how tourism may affect the native population, but I cannot see how excess tourists affects the Earth. This is all globo/commie inspired.
Wouldn’t be the first time Commies tried to exploit a legitimate issue for their own benefit.
"If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?"
“excess tourists”
I got back from Spain yesterday. I understand the quote.
The globalists have overloaded the tourism trade.
I went to visit Park Guell (a world famous public park) in Barcelona with a 10 Euro admission charge. It was sold out that day and the next.
Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.
Why should the crazy skip the Canary Islands? Makes some jealous and even more determined to be even more woke than you.
> Be rich or be poor, those are the choices now. <
Sad but true. The traditional way of rising to the Middle Class was to get a good union job in a factory. Work hard. Save your money. Buy a nice house and raise a family.
Most of those factories have now moved to China, India, Vietnam, etc. Plenty of blame to go around for that.
All the AirBnBs I stayed in were in residences.
My money almost certainly helped pay the residents’ mortgages and rents.
Europe depends heavily on tourism. Industry has shifted to a very large extent to Asia.
“Nobody [in my social circle] goes there anymore, it’s too crowded.”
Yogi Berra
Had to look up the location:
Easy to see why Europeans would love this location. The Islands themselves need a strong, organized tourist board to control the flow and eject troublemakers.
Of course, there’s always the chance they will be invaded by “migrants” who take over, as has happened to the Italian island of Lampedusa. So maybe the Canaries should welcome their European human shields.
“Ibiza”
is in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean.
Ibiza probably has it worse.
The Brits living in Spain I met were very nice people.
“Do you happen to speak English?”
[often said after I said a of few words of Spanish]
The Spanish people I met were uniformly pleasant too.
