A prominent Long Island pediatrician was killed when she tumbled out of a moving Airstream trailer — still clutching the door’s handle — and onto an upstate highway during a family road trip over the weekend, according to state police and kin.

Dr. Monika Woroniecka — a 58-year-old married mom and children’s allergy and immunology specialist with Stony Brook Medicine — was in the 2024 silver trailer with other family members when she fell through the door shortly after 3 p.m. and onto State Route 12E in Watertown in a freak accident, said police and family.

Woroniecka’s husband, Robert, 59, was driving the gray 2019 Ram pickup truck pulling the trailer at the time, according to a press release.

Motorists who witnessed the frightening fatal fall said the passenger-side door of the Airstream flew open, helped by the wind — while the doctor was clutching its handle, police said.

...

The helpless woman landed on the shoulder of the highway, striking her head.

She was rushed to Samaritan Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

The traffic accident came as Woroniecka and other relatives boarded the trailer for the final 20 minutes of a road trip from Stony Brook, LI, where the family lives,

The pic of the trailer shows the door opening from right to left, meaning into the wind. Maybe the door wasn’t locked properly and wasn’t sealed, so in her attempt to slightly open and reclose the door, it caught the airflow and ripped it open. That much suface area on the door would easily be enough to pull her out when it opened.

They were breaking the law...riding in a “bumper-pull” type trailer in NY state is illegal. (5th Wheel is OK):

https://blog.campingworld.com/learn-to-rv/what-states-can-you-ride-in-a-travel-trailer-or-fifth-wheel/

(Riding in a “towed” is a bad idea in general...motorhome/Class B with seatbelts is a better idea).

We cannot know about her actions, but in our Airstream, we left the door open somehow— did we follow the check list? The door caught the wind and hit the catch hard enough to spring the door so that a mechanic was required to bend it back to a door that would close.

Interesting, in this condition we drove through a southern check point and no one noticed the open door. (The agent stood on the driver side and motioned us through.)

We never drove with a person or pet in the trailer though, it is not safe.

I just hope I won’t see an Airstream lawsuit, unless it says: ‘If you or your loved ones were STUPID enough to ride in an Airstream, call Chatham Law. We can’t give you smarts, but we’ll sue Thor Industries into bankruptcy.’ 🤓

Dire Straits song : Industrial disease

The song’s title is a British term for work-related illness or disease, ..... The .... There is a double meaning in that , at the time, “industrial disease” referred to both an occupational illness and the decline of British industry.

subject matter of the lyrics was ostensibly the decline of the British manufacturing industry in the early 1980s,[2] describing strikes, clinical and economic depression, and societal dysfunction

“The helpless stupid woman landed on the shoulder of the highway, striking her head."

When do Dems demand seatbelts in pull-behinds?

"Sling-shotted" might be the least of your worries. Pictures like this, and what I've actually seen on interstates, tells me NOBODY rides in our moving 32-footer. Ever.

"A prominent Long Island pediatrician..."

She is now the newest poster child for 'Education does not equal Common Sense'. I have met so many people that are book smart mensa geniuses but have no common sense at all. Maybe she should have Googled it before opening that door.

My guess is she reached for the handle to stabilize herself from the trailer getting a little wobbly and the wind-assisted door movement overcame her. I'm also guessing this was not sudden because she was found with the handle still in her hand which means she was using extreme grip in an attempt to try to close the door and she had the time to use all her might to hold onto that handle before breaking off.

Ka-ching update!

Family of NY doctor killed after falling from moving trailer while going to watch eclipse cite ‘significant safety oversight’

BTW, the article notes that the family knew that riding in a moving travel trailer is illegal in sone states.

What the family neglects to mention, though the article does, is that NYS is one of them.

I’ve never been in a trailer; but that was my first thought on seeing the article.

You’re never supposed to ride in a trailer that’s being towed.

Yep.

Get an SUV or a crew cab pickup.
